T-town Advances in 8-3A State Basketball Tourney

Teutopolis Junior high School claimed an opening win over Peotone 36-16 but fell to Pleasant Plains and will play for third place at the  Class 8-3A State Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Shoes pushed their unbeaten mark to 25-0 with the win over Peotone. T-town stepped out to a 13-4 opening quarter lead and held a 19-7 first half lead.

T-town was led by Karsyn Mette with nine points. The Shoes then advanced to face Pleasant Plains.

Pleasant Plains took a 15-7 opening quarter lead but T-town came roaring back in the second period to pull within 16-15 at halftime. The Shoes pushed ahead 24-22 going into the final quarter. But Pleasant Plains rallied with an 8-4 final period to win 30-27.

T-town was led by Olivia Niemerg with 11 points. The Shoes are now 25-1 on the season and will play in the third place game Thursday at 6 p.m. against Dunlap Valley Middle School (18-5). Dunlap beat Hillsboro 34-27 then fell to St. Joseph 52-27. Pleasant Plains (22-3) will face St. Joseph (25-1) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday for the state title.

Class 8-1A State Tournament

Sigel St. Michael saw its season come to a close in the first game of the Class 8-1A State Tournament at Clinton Junior High School Saturday.

The Sharpshooters fell to Lexington 31-27. St. Michael took a 6-4 opening quarter lead and held that two point lead at halftime, 17-15. Lexington went ahead 8-6 but St. Michael's Hope Bueker tied the game with two quick baskets and the Sharpshooters went into the half ahead.

Tia Hardt connected on a three-pointer for Lexington to start the third period. The Sharpshooters went ahead 21-19 at the three minute mark on free throws by Bueker. But the Minutemen tied the game at 21 and a layup gave Lexington the 23-21 lead going into the final quarter.

From there, Bueker connected on free throws to knot the score but Lexington took possession and converted two layups to put the Minutemen ahead 27-23. Micah McWhorter made two free trows to pull the Sharpshooters within two at the 1:52 mark. Lexie Niebrugge's basket tied the score at 27-27 with a little over a minute remaining. Lexington then returned from a timeout and scored four points and that was the end of the game.

St. Michael finished the season with a 16-7 record.

Class 8-2A State Tournament

Brownstown/St. Elmo's season came to a close in opening round play of the Class 8-2A State Tournament at Lewistown Central High School Saturday.

BSE came into the contest unbeaten with a 24-0 record. The opening quarter was neck-and-neck with Bismarck-Henning moving ahead 11-10 at the end of the period. The Eagles had the same tally on BSE in the second period to lead 22-20 at halftime.

Andi Chandler connected on a three-point basket for the Bombers to start the third quarter. But Lexi Hudson answered for the Eagles and that started an offensive run. Emily Meidel scored 16 points in the second half to lead the winners with 31. Bismarck-Henning had a 13-10 third quarter run and a 7-5 final period.

Claire Wilhour led BSE with 23 points as the Bombers finished the season with a 24-1 record.
