Hearts Win at Mattoon; Other Friday Scores (UPDATED)

The Effingham Hearts picked up a conference road win Friday night with a 71-58 victory at Mattoon over the Green Wave. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

Mattoon had the early edge, leading by as many as six points before the Hearts went on a spurt to lead 19-18 after one quarter. The Hearts pushed the advantage to four, 33-29, at halftime, but couldn't shake the Green Wave, who hit a three at the buzzer in each of the first two quarters.

The third quarter was the key for the Hearts, who outscored Mattoon 21-6 in the period to take a 54-35 lead. Effingham had a 21-point lead at one point. Mattoon outscored Effingham 23-17 in the fourth quarter and got as close as 10 points before the Hearts regrouped to win by 13.

Effingham shot 52% from the field on 25 of 48 including five of 12 on three-point tries. The Hearts made 16 of 21 foul shots, turned the ball over 13 times and pulled down 19 rebounds.

Mattoon made 21 of 42 shots for an even 50%, including six of 13 threes. The Wave made 10 of 16 foul shots, committed 18 turnovers, and grabbed 23 rebounds.

Grant Wolfe, battling foul troubles, still led Effingham with 21 points, but Jacob Donaldson scored 19 points and Sean Zerrusen scored 15 points. Reed Schafer had a good night as he had to play the point when Wolfe was out and scored nine points while taking two charges. Jared Minor scored three points, and Brady Jackson and Landon Wolfe each scored two points.

William Courtney with 12 points, Drake Jeffries with 11 and Davis Johnson with 10 points led Mattoon.

Effingham improved to 5-1 with the win, 2-0 in the Apollo, while Mattoon dropped to 2-5.
