Hearts Clobber Charleston, Shoes Knock Off Top-Rated Breese Central; Other Friday Scores (UPDATE)

The Effingham Hearts played what Coach Ron Reed termed their best game of the young season Friday night, defeating the Charleston Trojans, 78-47. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com 

Effingham won their home opener and Apollo Conference opener in defeating the previously unbeaten Trojans. Both teams are now 4-1 on the season.

The Hearts trailed 5-4 in the first quarter before scoring 16 straight points to take a 20-5 lead and ended up leading 26-12 after one period. It was 40-25 at halftime, but the Hearts played a stellar third quarter, outscoring Charleston 19-7 to take a 59-32 lead, and then outpointed the Trojans 19-15 in the final period to post the 31-point win. Effingham led by as many as 34 points.

Effingham shot 53% from the field, making 27 of 51 shots including four of eight three-point tries. The Hearts made 20 of 24 foul shots, committed just 10 turnovers and pulled down 36 rebounds.

Charleston was held to 39% shooting, making 18 of 46. The Trojans turned the ball over 18 times and grabbed just 18 rebounds, half the Hearts' total.

Grant Wolfe led Effingham with 22 points despite only playing about half the game. Jacob Donaldson scored 14 points, Sean Zerrusen bounced back from an ankle injury to score 13 points, and Jared Minor just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Also for the Hearts: Landon Wolfe 8, Brady Jackson 5, and Reed Schafer, Mason Hull and Ryan Sandifer 2 each.

Blaze Taylor-Lutz led Charleston with 13 points while Will Strader added 10.

Effingham won the JV game, the first of the season for the Hearts, 62-46. Landon Wolfe scored 29 points for the JV Hearts, while Mason Hull scored 16 points. Also for the Hearts JV: Ryan Sandifer 8, Jason Devore 4, David Wallace 2, Bryce Lohman 2, Alec Morrissey 1.

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes knocked off top-rated and undefeated Breese Central Friday night, 42-38.

Breese Central held the early lead in the contest, ahead 10-6 after one quarter and still leading 19-17 at halftime. The Wooden Shoes' Brett Mette was held scoreless in the first half but, as Mette went, so went the Shoes. The senior broke loose for 10 points in the third quarter, when T-Town outscored BC 14-9 to take a 31-28 lead. The Shoes could never shake the Cougars but outscored them 11-10 in the final period to win by four.

Mette's 10 third quarter points were the only points he scored in the contest. Mitch Hardiek led the Shoes with 13 points and 8 rebounds. Also for Teutopolis: Chris Ungrund 9, Michael Drees 6 (along with 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 charges taken), Devin Smith 2, Kyle Smith 2. 

Chase Schneider led Breese Central with 16 points.
