Bulldogs Edge Hatchets, Hearts Drop Loss To Trojans, Area Girls Roundup

Effingham St. Anthony High School edged Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 31-25 in girls basketball action Thursday evening.

WSS edged out to a 9-4 opening quarter lead, then held a 20-12 halftime lead. Schlechte tallied seven points in the second period for the Hatchets.

St. Anthony came back and pulled within 24-23 in the third quarter as Abbie Schmidt nailed four baskets and had nine points. The Bulldogs then held the Hatchets to only one point in the final quarter while putting in eight to pull out the victory.

The Bulldogs' Schmidt led the way with nine points while Emma Richards and Hunter Niebrugge had six each in even scoring.

WSS was led by Schlechte with 10 points.

In a junior varsity contest, St. Anthony played Effingham since WSS doesn't have enough players for a junior varsity team. St. Anthony won 24-12.

At Effingham

Charleston stepped out to a 23-10 opening quarter lead and remained unbeaten this season by downing Effingham 70-56.

The Trojans nailed eight three-pointers in the contest as Rennels, Swango, Sherwood and O'Dell all connected on two each. Sherwood led the scoring with 29 points while Swango added 11. The Trojans are 8-0.

The Hearts were led by Carsyn Fearday with 15 and Aly Armstrong with 10. EHS drops to 4-2.

"We got beat by a very good basketball team," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We need to do a better job of limiting their three-point attempts and their free throws. They are so hard to guard. I thought we played really hard throughout the game. We are just working on being more consistent and more comfortable with each other."

Brownstown/St. Elmo had three players hit double figures for a 65-40 National Trail Conference win over Dieterich.

BSE held just a 26-23 halftime lead then had a 20-8 third period run and never looked back. Kyrstyn Fitch had 21 points while Gabi Moore had 15 and Dana Shelton had 11.

Dieterich was led by Anna Shadle and Kallee Heuerman with eight points each. Heuerman pulled down eight rebounds. Melody Mahnke had three steals. The Maroons drop to 0-3 in the conference, 3-7 overall.

Coach Laurie Thompson's crew had a big scoring second quarter to claim a 51-35 victory over Pana Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes edged out to a 14-10 opening quarter lead then had a 19-7 second period run as Drees scored nine points and Sandschafer connected on a three-pointer.

Sandschafer finished with 13 while Drees added 12 in the victory. Hartke led in rebounds with seven while Thompson chipped in with five. Repking had five steals.
