Jason Hanson was hired Monday night as the new boys varsity basketball coach at Teutopolis High School.

The vote was 6-0. Dan Burke was not present for the meeting.

Teutopolis Superintendent Bill Fritcher said Hanson was one of nine people to apply for the post, which came open when Andy Fehrenbacher was not rehired as coach last month. The lack of a teaching position, Fritcher said, was a consideration in the number of applicants. That's not a concern for Hanson, though, who has been in private business since leaving the Neoga district.

Hanson coached at Neoga from 2005-06 to 2010-11 and won three regional championships and one sectional title. He was National Trail Conference Coach of the Year twice and was Decatur Herald and Review Coach of the Year in his final season at Neoga.

Hanson has coached at Casey-Westfield the past two seasons after taking two years off from high school coaching. This past season saw Hanson's Warriors squad shake off a slow start to advance to Super-Sectional play.

In a statement, Hanson said, "It is an honor to be named the head boys basketball coach at Teutopolis. Teutopolis has a long history of success due to the hard work of many players and coaches. This tradition has only continued to grow with each coach over the years. Coach Crawford and Coach Fehrenbacher were both gracious enough to allow me to come to practice when I first started at Neoga. It was easy to see why they had a tremendous amount of success. Andy's success over the last eight years is almost unmatched. His teams were always very disciplined and well-coached."

Hanson added, "I am eager to get started. I can't wait to meet the team and start working towards becoming the best team we can be. I'm sure there will be some growing pains as there are with any change. However, with hard work and dedication, we will get to where we want to go. Go Shoes!"
