(TEUTOPOLIS HIGH SCHOOL JUNIOR BRETT METTE RECEIVES A BASKETBALL SOON TO BE CUSTOMIZED IN HONOR OF HIS 1000TH CAREER POINT FROM WOODEN SHOES COACH ANDY FEHRENBACHER)

It's rare for a Teutopolis High School basketball player to score 1,000 career points, but it's even more rare for an underclassman to reach the milestone.

That's the case, though, with Wooden Shoes junior Brett Mette.

The 6'5" Mette scored his 1,000th point during last Friday night's sectional championship game against Carterville in Benton. He finished the game with 16 points, leaving him at 1,007 points heading into his senior season.

It was unusual that Mette got #1,000 in a post-season game. Wooden Shoes Coach Andy Fehrenbacher said he thought about asking for a delay to recognize the accomplishment, but didn't know whether it would be right in such a contest. That led to a brief ceremony Wednesday morning in J.H. Griffin Gym to mark the event.

Mette, the son of Don and Nancy Mette, is the 15th player to reach 1,000 points in Wooden Shoes boys basketball history. He said he hasn't decided about college, but would like to focus on something related to Construction Trades. He feels he's grown stronger and more physical in his style of play. He likes post play and said the fact that he draws the most attention from opposing teams is something he enjoys. He said, "I like to be in that position. I like to have the ball in my hands."

Wooden Shoes' opponents won't be relishing the thought of having to stop Mette for another season.
