The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes saw their basketball season come to an end Friday night at the hands of the Carterville Lions, 77-63, in the championship game of the Benton Class 2A Sectional Tournament. The game was heard on KJ Country 102.3 and www.kjcountry.com.

Teutopolis led through most of the first half. The Shoes led 17-13 after one quarter. Carterville came back to take a lead midway through the second period, but the Shoes regained the lead and were in front 32-28 at halftime.

The third quarter was the start of the end for the Shoes, though, as Carterville outscored T-Town 18-9 in the period to take a 46-41 lead. Then came a fourth quarter teams usually only dream about. Carterville hit all nine of its shots from the field and made 11 of 13 free throws, outscoring the Shoes 29-22 in the period to claim the win.

Carterville hit 54% of its shots, 23 of 43, but the tale of two halves should be noted. The Lions made just nine of 24 shots in the first half, 14 of 19 in the second half. They also finished 26 of 28 from the foul line. The Lions turned the ball over 10 times, grabbed 25 rebounds, and made four of 14 three-point shots.

Teutopolis hit 23 of 56 shots for 41%, but a three-for-20 third quarter really hurt. The Shoes also had a tough time at the foul line, making just 10 of 22 attempts. T-Town turned the ball over 13 times and pulled down 28 rebounds while making six of 17 three-point tries.

Brett Mette led Teutopolis with 16 points, going past the 1,000-point career scoring milestone in the process to sit at 1,007 points heading into his senior season. Mitch Hardiek was also in double figures with 11 points and Tyler Gebben scored 10 points. Also for T-Town: Brock Mette 8, Michael Drees and Devin Smith 5 each, Kyle Smith 4, and Jordan Thoele and Blake Mette 2 each.

Twins Will and Matt Galik were better than even advertised for Carterville, teaming up for 52 points, 27 from Matt and 25 from Will. Also for Carterville: Austin Swalls 11, Taylor Heil 8, Blake Watson 4, and Darien Miller 2.

Teutopolis concludes its season with a 26-5 record, and sees a run of four straight sectional championships snapped. Carterville is now 25-4 and will play Breese Mater Dei Tuesday at 7:30pm at the Carbondale Class 2A Super-Sectional at SIU Arena.
