Hearts, Shoes Win, Bulldogs Lose at Wooden Shoe Shootout

The Effingham Hearts and the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes posted wins, and the St. Anthony Bulldogs suffered a loss in action Saturday at the 3rd Annual Wooden Shoe Shootout at Teutopolis High School's J.H. Griffin Gym. The games were heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  

EFFINGHAM 61, EVANSVILLE BOSSE 57

The Hearts posted their second win in less than 24 hours with the four-point win over the Bosse Bulldogs of Evansville, Indiana.

Effingham held a 20-12 lead after one quarter and were still up by eight at halftime, 33-25. Bosse outscored the Hearts 32-28 in the second half and got the lead down to one late in the contest, but the Hearts hit some big foul shots to post the win.

Effingham shot 50% on the nose from the field, 24 of 48 and added nine of 13 from the foul line. The Hearts turned the ball over just five times in the game, but were outrebounded 28-18. Effingham made four of 14 three-point shots.

Bosse hit 44% of its shots, 22 of 50 including three of 14 threes. Bosse made eight of 12 foul shots, and turned the ball over 12 times.

Grant Wolfe led the way for Effingham with 20 points of eight of 15 shooting. Michael Carie scored 15 points, going seven of 14. Braydon Bone scored 13 points and led the Hearts in rebounds with five. Also for the Hearts: Jacob Donaldson five, Jared Minor four, and Reed Schafer and Michael Woltman two points apiece.

Da'Sean Summers led Bosse with 22 points.

Effingham improved to 18-6 on the season, while Bosse slipped to 7-10.

MARSHALL 61, ST. ANTHONY 56

The Bulldogs were in the game throughout the contest before falling by five to a Lions club now 19-7 on the season.

Marshall held a narrow 13-12 lead after one quarter. The game was tied 23-23 at halftime. The third quarter was the difference, though, as Marshall outscored St. Anthony 20-9 in the period to take a 43-32 lead.

The Bulldogs came battling back, getting the deficit down to two possessions before Marshall hit some foul shots to seal the win.

St. Anthony made 20 of 47 shots for 43% including five of 10 on threes. The Bulldogs made 11 of 16 foul shots, turned the ball over 12 times and grabbed 22 rebounds.

Marshall hit 17 of 37 shots for 46%, made 20 of 27 free throws, turned the ball over 10 times, and grabbed 21 rebounds while making six of 17 three-point tries.

Andrew Gardewine scored 21 points for the Bulldogs, 18 in the second half, to lead all scorers. Nick Grunloh scored 11 points, Connor Greene and Derek Rios nine each, and James Kabbes six points.

Brock Finkbiner with 18 points and Josiah Wallace with 16 points led Marshall in scoring.

The Bulldogs fell to 16-10 on the season.

TEUTOPOLIS 55, DANVILLE 42

The Wooden Shoes posted a blazing 23-10 edge over the Vikings in the first quarter and held their own from there. 

The Shoes had the lead at 19 points before Danville got some shots down in the second half to close the gap. It was 37-22 Shoes at halftime, and 50-35 after three quarters.

Teutopolis shot a sizzling 61% from the field, making 22 of 36 shots, including hitting on seven of 10 three-pointers. The Shoes struggled from the line for one of the few times this season, making eight of 17 and committed 18 turnovers while grabbing 19 rebounds.

Danville made 47% of its shots, 17 of 36, and made five of six foul shots, but turnovers were a killer as Danville turned it over 23 times. Danville grabbed 17 rebounds and made three of 11 three-point tries.

Brett Mette led Teutopolis with 19 points on six of 12 shooting and tied Devin Smith for rebounding honors with seven. Smith scored 14 points on five of 10 shooting. Also for the Shoes: Tyler Gebben seven including a monster dunk, Jordan Thoele, Brock Mette and Blake Mette with four points apiece, Kyle Smith two, and Michael Drees one point.

Teutopolis improved to 23-4 with the victory.

Beecher City edged Neoga 65-63 in a National Trail Conference matchup. Leading Beecher City were Austin Rexroad with 24 points and Jackson Bales with 22.

Effingham's Griffin Paige wrestled at 182 pounds in the individual sectional, but did not advance to State.
