Junior Eighth-Grade Regionals -- Jan. 31

Eighth-Grade boys basketball regionals got underway Saturday. Following are scores from opening round play:

Class 8-1A Palestine Regional

In the opener, Martinsville edged host Palestine 38-35. Martinsville advances to face Sigel St. Michael at 6 p.m. today.

In the second game today, Newton St.Thomas takes on Hutsonville at 7:15 p.m.

Class 8-1A Mulberry Grove Regional

There was only one game played Saturday. Sorento defeated Pocahontas 41-35. Sorento advances to face top-seeded Mulberry Grove Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.

Tonight's games find Windsor against Stewardson-Strasburg at 6:15 followed by Pana Sacred Heart taking on Beecher City at 7:45. The winners advance to a Tuesday contest against each other.

Class 8-2A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional

Altamont advanced with a 38-15 win over Dieterich. Altamont now faces Effingham St. Anthony at 6:15 p.m. today. Altamont was led by Jared Kollmann with 10 points. Nine other players scored in the game.

Dieterich was led by Austin Einhorn with four points.

In the second game Saturday, Oblong downed Neoga 41-32. Oblong advances to face St. Elmo/Brownstown at 7:30 p.m today.

Neoga held a 20-17 halftime lead and led 29-26 going into the final quarter. Oblong then had a 10-6 final quarter run to pull out the victory.

Neoga was led by Fletcher with 15 points.

Class 8-2A Raymond Lincolnwood Regional

Assumption Central A&M and Raymond Lincolnwood advanced from first round play.

Central A&M won over Findlay Okaw Valley 46-19. The squad advances to face Nokomis at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Raymond Lincolnwood then trounced Ramsey 36-9. Lincolnwood will now meet Cowden-Herrick at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Class 8-3A Robinson Nuttall Regional

Cumberland fell to Casey-Westfield in the first game of this regional, 45-35. Casey-Westfield advances to meet Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 6 p.m. today.

In the second contest Saturday, Jasper County was a 42-33 winner over Marshall. The third game went to Robinson Nuttall over Lawrenceville Parkview 42-30.

Jasper County takes on Robinson Nuttall at 7:15 p.m. today.

Class 8-3A Shelbyville Moulton Regional

This regional opens tonight with Arthur facing Blue Mound Meridian at 6 followed by Pana against Sullivan at 7:15. The winner of the opening game will face Teutopolis at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The winner of the second game squares off against Shelbyville Moulton at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Class 8-4A Effingham Regional

Mattoon and Danville South View picked up opening round victories.

Mattoon won over Charleston 34-20 and advances to face Effingham at 6 p.m. today.

Danville South View bounced Tolono Unity 40-16 and will face Danville North Ridge at 7:30 p.m. today.
