Neoga Wins NTC Girls Tournament, T-town Sixth At Highland

BEECHER CITY -- Neoga High School captured the championship of the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

EC Thies, Madison Butler and Jaycie Roy all scored in double figures for the Indians. Thies led the way with 20, connecting on eight field goals, four from three-point range. Butler chipped in with 18, hitting three field goals and connecting on 12 of 14 free throws. Roy added 10.

Dieterich was led by Mallorie Vahling with 15 and Anna Shadle with 10.

In the third place contest, St. Anthony downed Brownstown/St. Elmo 53-43. The two teams played to a 6-6 opening quarter tie. St. Anthony then moved ahead 23-19 and had a 13-7 third period run.

Megan Nuxoll tallied 11 while Emily McDevitt added nine and Abbie Schmidt eight. Morgan Brown led BSE with 15 and Krystyn Fitch added 11.

The consolation championship went to South Central 39-37 over Altamont. The Cougars edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead before the score was tied at 19-19 at halftime. The Cougars then had a slight 8-6 edge in the third period and that edge was the winner.

Abby Hahn tallied 15 for the Cougars. Altamont was led by Keidron Duckwitz with 10.

"We are a young team and sometimes that shows up in some situations, but we are learning to to keep our emotions more in check in tense situations," said South Central Coach Scott Kapper. "At the end we were forcing some things but settled down and kept our compsure. We had some big shots at the end of the game that we hit and some defensive rebounds bounced our way. I am proud of how hard the girls played."

Thies (Neoga), Megan Nuxoll (St. Anthony), Madison Butler (Neoga), Mallorie Vahling (Dieterich), Jaycie Roy (Neoga), Morgan Brown (Brownstown/St. Elmo), Abby Hahn (South Central), Morgan Gardewine (St. Anthony), Krystyn Fitch (Brownstown/St. Elmo), Emma Richards (St. Anthony), Chandler Ward (Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City) and Kallee Heuerman (Dieterich).

Highland Tournament

Teutopolis fell to Taylorville 60-55 to finish sixth at the 29th Annual Highland Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes held a 23-21 halftime lead as Hardiek scored seven in the opening quarter and nine by halftime. But the Tornadoes rallied and came back with a 21-15 third period surge to lead 42-38 at halftime then edged the Shoes 18-17 in the final quarter.

Bolinger led the winners wih 21 points while Durham added 16. T-town was led by Hardiek with 22 and Sandschafer with 10. Thoele led in rebounds with six.

In other games Saturday, Troy Triad beat Trenton Wesclin 51-30 to win the consolation championship. Third place went to Highland over Breese Central 46-43. Belleville West won the championship by downing Breese Mater Dei 55-51.
