Effingham Wins James Burke Eighth-Grade Tournament

GREENVILLE -- Effingham edged Carlyle 37-36 to win the championship of the 67th Annual James Burke Memorial Tournament Friday evening.

Carlyle jumped out to a 12-5 opening quarter lead and led 16-14 at halftime. The Mustangs tied the score at 27-27 in the third quarter. In the final period, the Mustangs had a 10-9 edge to pull out the victory.

Wolfe tallied 12 points to lead the Mustangs. Jackson and Wolfe had two steals each. Lee led in rebounds with nine while Wolfe added eight.

Named to the Greenville All-Tournament Team were Wolfe and Jackson from Effingham, Strullmeyer from Effingham St. Anthony, Reinacher from Carlyle and Ephron from Greenville.

This was Effingham's sixth Greenville championship since joining the tournament 13 years ago.
