Black Guides Illini To Win Over Purdue, College Scores

Champaign, IL (SportsNetwork.com) -- Leron Black notched a double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds as the Illinois Fighting Illini topped the Purdue Boilermakers, 66-57, in Big Ten Conference action at State Farm Center.

Malcolm Hill posted a game-high 18 points for the Fighting Illini (13-7, 3-4 Big Ten), who have won three of their last five. Kendrick Nunn and Nnanna Egwu logged 14 and 11 points, respectively, the latter also blocking five shots.

Jon Octeus and Rapheal Davis both netted 14 points for the Boilermakers (11-8, 3-3), who have dropped three of their last four. Vince Edwards tallied 11 points and six assists.

The Boilermakers shot 43.3 percent from the field in the first half, but that included 0-of-6 from the perimeter. The home team shot just 28.6 percent from the floor but hit 10-of-12 at the free-throw line to go up 32-30 at halftime.

In the second half the visitors dipped to 36.7 percent from the floor, while the hosts improved to 44.0 percent. Strong free-throw shooting (11-of-12) helped the Illini maintain the lead down the stretch.

The home team knocked down 21-24 at the charity stripe, compared to 4-of-9 for Purdue.


(12) Utah 86, Washington State 64

Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) -- Brandon Taylor made four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points and seven assists as No. 12 Utah bounced back with a thorough 86-64 victory over Washington State on Wednesday. Utah had its seven-game winning streak come to a crashing halt in an 18-point loss to Arizona last Saturday, but the Utes (15-3, 5-1 Pac-12) recovered quite nicely by making 48.3 percent of their shots and 19-of-22 from the foul line.

They also coughed it up only four times while forcing 17 turnovers. Delon Wright totaled 17 points and eight assists, and Jordan Loveridge netted 14 points with six rebounds in the rout. DaVonte Lacy led the Cougars (9-9, 3-3) with 15 points, while Josh Hawkinson and Jordan Railey each scored 12 points and combined for 18 rebounds.


(14) Wichita State 76, Missouri State 53

Springfield, MO (SportsNetwork.com) -- Ron Baker, Fred VanVleet and Tekele Cotton each scored 15 points and No. 14 Wichita State pulled away in the second half for a 76-53 win over Missouri State in a Missouri Valley Conference game. Darius Carter added 14 points for the Shockers (17-2, 7-0 MVC), who remained unbeaten since losing to George Washington in their last non-conference game on Christmas. Dorrian Williams and Chris Kendrix had 10 points apiece to lead the Bears (8-11, 2-5), who have dropped five in a row.


(15) North Carolina 87, Wake Forest 71

Winston-Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) -- The Wake Forest Demon Deacons had no answer for No. 15 North Carolina in the Tar Heels' 87-71 win on Wednesday. North Carolina (15-4, 5-1 ACC) shot 60.3 percent from the field, led by Brice Johnson's 19-point effort on 8-of-11 shooting. The Tar Heels dominated Wake Forest in the paint by a 50-26 margin. Justin Jackson chipped in 17 points for North Carolina, while Kennedy Meeks added 16 points and eight rebounds. Marcus Paige facilitated the offense with 12 points and eight assists. The Demon Deacons (9-10, 1-5) led for only 50 seconds in the first half. Wake Forest had four players reach double figures, led by Codi Miller-McIntyre with 20 points. Devin Thomas contributed 12 points and a game-high 12 boards.


(20) Northern Iowa 66, Indiana State 60

Cedar Falls, IA (SportsNetwork.com) -- Matt Bohannon hit five 3s and led No. 20 Northern Iowa with 17 points as the Panthers held off Indiana State 66-60 on Wednesday. Seth Tuttle scored eight of his 16 points in the game's final two minutes for UNI (17-2, 6-1 MVC), which moved into second place in the conference with its sixth straight win. The Panthers' lone conference loss came in Evansville on New Years Day. Jeremy Morgan and Deon Mitchell added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Justin Gant and Brenton Scott both scored 13 points for Indiana State (9-10, 5-2).


(21) Baylor 81, Huston-Tillotson 61

Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) -- Rico Gathers' monster outing helped No. 21 Baylor pull away to beat NAIA Huston-Tillotson on Wednesday night. Gathers finished with 25 points and ripped down a career-high 28 rebounds in the Bears' 81-61 win over the Rams. Gathers set the school record as well as the Big-12 record for rebounds in a game. Taurean Prince and Al Freeman added 13 and 10 points, respectively, for Baylor (14-4), which trailed for a majority of the first half before establishing itself as the dominant team over the final 20 minutes. Shai Fields scored 21 of his 27 points in a spirited first 20 minutes for the Rams (3-14), who have dropped five straight games.

 

Women's Basketball

UT Martin 81, EIU 51

MARTIN, Tenn. -- UT Martin shot 52 percent in the second half as the Skyhawks pulled away from Eastern Illinois for an 81-51 win on Wednesday night in Martin, Tenn.

EIU fell to 7-13 overall, 4-3 in the OVC.  EIU will host Austin Peay at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Lantz Arena with the national touring act the ZooperStars!!! set to perform.  UTM won its sixth straight improving to 10-9 overall, 6-0 in the OVC.
Both teams opened the first half with hot shooting as EIU shot 52 percent in the opening half and UTM shot 53 percent.  The Skyhawks used a 16-2 points off turnover advantage in the opening half to lead 36-31.

EIU was 3-of-3 from 3-point range in the opening half with Shakita Cox draining a pair of 3-pointers and Grace Lennox knocking home another.  In the second half EIU was 0-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Ashia Jones took over the second half for the Skyhawks as she finished with 26 points, one of three UTM players in double figures.  UTM shot 52 percent in the second half finishing at 53 percent for the game.

The Skyhawks quickly extended their five point halftime lead to a double figure lead as Tiara Caldwell had a pair of lay-ups.  Caldwell finished with 10 points.

Jumpers by Bh’rea Griffin and Phylicia Johnson cut the Skyhawks lead back to single digits with Johnson’s bucket cutting UTM’s lead to 48-39 with 15:35 to play.

Jones went to the free throw line on the next possession and EIU never challenged after that point.  Former EIU player Danielle Woolfolk had 12 points for UTM.

Sabina Oroszova was the lone EIU player in double figures as she posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.  EIU shot 39 percent for game.  Cox finished as the Panthers second leading scorer with eight points.
