Vandalia Edges Altamont, Dieterich Still Unbeaten, Area Boys Roundup

VANDALIA -- Despite an early lead, Altamont fell to Vandalia 56-55 in boys non-conference basketball action Tuesday evening.

Altamont held a 20-17 first quarter lead as Branden Runge tallied six and Ryan Armstrong led with seven. Klaiton Wolff scored five.

The Indians pushed ahead 37-26 at halftime. Armstrong, Wolff and Adam Mayhaus scored five each, as each one knocked in a three-pointer.

Vandalia came roaring back with a 21-9 third period run to take a 47-46 lead going into the final quarter. Colin Nestleroad banged home four baskets for the Vandals in the quarter.

In the final period, both teams finished with nine points and the third period run by Vandalia was the clincher.

Altamont was led by three players in double figures. Armstrong scored 19, Wolff 15 and Runge 12.

At Farina

South Central played host to Stewardson-Strasburg in a National Trail Conference contest and claimed a 50-39 victory.

The Cougars held a 28-21 halftime lead and had a 22-18 second half run. Harmerier tallied 15 for the w inners while Wilkins scored 11.

Stew-Stras was led by Overbeck with 20 and Jones with 11.

The Cougars are now 1-2 in the NTC, 6-10 overall.

At Olney

Dieterich had one bad quarter but rebounded to take a 50-46 non-conference win over Olney Tuesday evening.

The Movin' Maroons held a 17-11 opening quarter lead and moved that to 28-18 at halftime. Olney came back with a 14-7 third period run to pull within 35-32 going into the final quarter. Dieterich came back with a 15-14 final period lead for the win.

Bohnhoff scored 15 to lead the Maroons while Feldhake and L. Niemerg scored 10 each. Dieterich is now a perfect 18-0 on the season. Olney dropped to 8-7.

Teutopolis went on a second quarter tear and bounced Mattoon 82-53 Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes trailed Mattoon 12-10 after the opening quarter but went on a 27-6 run to lead 37-18 at halftime.

T-town had four players hit double figures. Brett Mette scored 15 to lead the way while Thoele added 12 points and D. Smith and Gebben tallied 11 each. The Shoes are now 15-2 on the season and won't return to action until Monday in the Nashville Tournament.

Cowden-Herrick outscored Windsor in three quarters to take a 76-50 National Trail Conference win.

The Hornets led 13-7 after the opening period. Windsor came back with a 22-15 second period run to lead 29-28. But Cowden-Herrick righted the ship with a 32-10 third period surge and never looked back.

Burrus tallied 25 for the winners while Blackerby chipped in with 18 and Pasley 14.

Windsor was led by Warner with 23 and Haddock with 14.

St. Elmo/Brownstown edged Ramsey 45-44 in action Tuesday evening.

Ramsey stepped out to a 20-10 opening quarter lead. St. Elmo/Brownstown pulled back within 24-20 at halftime and 38-33 going into the final period. The Eagles then had a 12-6 run to pull out the win.

Feezel scored 15 and Hardimon 11 in the victory for the Eagles who improve to 5-11.

It was the night for close games as Newton took a 47-42 win over Shelbyville in a non-conference matchup.

The Eagles held a 14-9 opening quarter lead but Shelbyville came roaring back with a 15-3 run to push into a 24-17 halftime lead.

Newton rallied with a 19-12 third period run to knot the score at 36-36 going into the final quarter. Newton then tallied an 11-6 final period run to pull out the five-point win.

Collin Harris was the lone Newton player in double figures with 22. Kyle Vahling chipped in with nine.

The Tigers held a 25-19 first half lead but Cumberland came back with an 18-10 third period run to lead 37-35 going into the final quarter. Bauguess was the catalyst in that run, scoring eight points.

The Tigers then rallied with a 19-8 final period surge, connecting on 10 free throws for the win.

Bauguss led Cumberland with 12 points while Cutts added 11.
