Effingham High School edged Cahokia 49-42 in girls basketball action Saturday evening.

The score was knotted at 8-8 after the opening quarter. EHS then moved ahead with a 19-10 second period run. Jantzen Michael knocked in three field goals, including a three-pointer, and a free throw for eight points in the quarter.

The two teams, again, played to an 8-8 third period tie before Cahokia made a 16-14 final period run only to fall short.

Michael finished with 22 points, hitting five field goals, three of those trifectas, and nine of nine at the line. Steffen contributed nine points.

"Jantzen had a great game for us," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "Besides scoring 22, she had seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals. She was everywhere today.

"We just kind of gutted this one out. We had our chances to put them away and to their credit, we just never could. We held them without a three point shot, which was huge as the Lewis girl can shoot it. Shelby Myers also had six rebounds. This was a good win for us to be able to follow up the success we had last week."
