D'Angelo Russell scored 22 points, including eight during a decisive 15-0 second-half run, to lead No. 20 Ohio State past Illinois 77-61 on Saturday.

Sam Thompson and Marc Loving each added 13 points for the Buckeyes (12-3, 1-1 Big Ten), which bounced back from a conference-opening, 71-65 loss at home to Iowa on Tuesday.

Rayvonte Rice had 20 points for the Illini (10-5, 0-2), who led by eight points in the first half and were ahead by three with 16:33 left before going scoreless for a span of 5:28.

 

Wisconsin Disposes of Northwestern

Evanston, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Sam Dekker and Frank Kaminsky both scored 16 points and No. 4 Wisconsin disposed of Northwestern 81-58 on Sunday. Dekker matched a career-high with four 3-pointers -- all in the first half -- and Kaminsky added 10 rebounds for his third straight double-double.

Duje Dukan added 14 points off the bench for Wisconsin (14-1, 2-0 Big Ten), which has won its first two conference games by an average of 20 points. Tre Demps gave 17 points, six rebounds and four assists for Northwestern (10-5, 1-1), and Bryant McIntosh scored 13. The Wildcats were coming off their first conference- opening win since 2005-06.


(5) Louisville 85, Wake Forest 76

Winston-Salem, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - Chris Jones scored 20 of his 22 points in the second half, enabling fifth-ranked Louisville to survive its first challenge in the ACC by rallying for an 85-76 victory over Wake Forest. Jones added a career-high 10 assists and keyed an 12-2 run that turned a one- point deficit with under five minutes to play into an 80-71 Cardinals' lead in Louisville's debut in its new conference. Montrezl Harrell also came up big for Louisville (13-1, 1-0 ACC), amassing 25 points and 13 rebounds. Terry Rozier chipped in 18 points for the Cardinals before fouling out late. First- year head coach Danny Manning's Demon Deacons nearly pulled off the stunning upset, getting a career-best 31 points from Devin Thomas and overcoming a 13- point first-half deficit to briefly move in front. Thomas also had 11 rebounds while shooting 11-of-14 from the field for Wake Forest (8-7, 0-2), which entered Sunday's matchup on a season-high three-game win streak. Codi Miller-McIntyre and Mitchell Wilbekin tallied 14 points each in the loss.


(8) Arizona 73, Arizona State 49

Tucson, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Rondae Hollis-Jefferson tallied 13 points and eight rebounds as No. 8 Arizona got back on track with an easy 73-49 victory over Arizona State at the McKale Center. Stanley Johnson had 13 points and seven rebounds to help the Wildcats (13-1, 1-0 Pac-12) bounce back from their lone defeat of the season, a 71-67 loss at UNLV on Dec. 23. Brandon Ashley also scored 13 points in a Pac-12 opener in which Arizona led by 20 at
halftime and was never threatened by its in-state rival. Arizona State (8-6, 0-1) shot just 32.6 percent and committed 22 turnovers. with no Sun Devil finishing in double figures. Gerry Blakes paced ASU with nine points.


(10) Utah 71, UCLA 39

Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) -- Delon Wright filled the box score with 11 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals as No. 10 Utah sent the UCLA Bruins to a fifth straight loss in Sunday's 71-39 drubbing. A balanced scoring attack and shutdown defense helped the Utes (12-2, 2-0 Pac-12) improve to 10-0 at Huntsman Center and roll to a fifth straight win. Jordan Loveridge chipped in with 10 points, Jakob Poeltl added nine with 10 rebounds and four others netted at least six points. The spiraling Bruins (8-7, 0-2) were limited to 28.8 percent shooting and have averaged just 52.6 points during their recent skid. Tony Parker led the way with 12 points, while Bryce Alford was held scoreless on 0-of-10 shooting despite coming into the game logging a team-best 16.8 points per game.


(13) Kansas 76, UNLV 61

Lawrence, KS (SportsNetwork.com) -- Frank Mason III scored 18 points and No. 13 Kansas pulled away to beat upset-minded UNLV 76-61 on Sunday. Perry Ellis and Wayne Selden Jr. added 16 points apiece and Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 12 with 10 rebounds for the Jayhawks (11-2), who extended their home winning streak to 16 games. Christian Wood and Cody Doolin scored 12 points apiece to lead UNLV (9-5), which was coming off a 76-71 loss to Wyoming on Wednesday in its Mountain West Conference opener.


(16) Wichita State 70, Illinois State 62

Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) -- Ron Baker scored 15 points, Darius Carter added 14 and No. 16 Wichita State held off upset-minded Illinois State, 70-62, on Sunday. Wichita State (12-2, 2-0 MVC) recorded its 20th consecutive Missouri Valley Conference win and 24th in row at home, but not without being tested. The Redbirds stayed competitive even though they shot 36.5 percent from the floor. They were within two with under four minutes left, but the Shockers, who made 52.3 percent of their shots, pulled away with a 10-3 run. Daishon Knight carried the offensive load for Illinois State (8-6, 0-2), totaling 24 points on 10-of-23 shooting.


Stanford 68, (21) Washington 60

Stanford, CA (SportsNetwork.com) -- Chasson Randle set a Stanford record, forced overtime with a late layup and helped the Cardinal knock off No. 21 Washington 68-60 on Sunday. Randle scored a game-high 24 points on 9-of-21 shooting. His lone 3-point make in seven attempts was the 242nd of his career, good for first in Stanford history. Anthony Brown added 16 points and Stefan Nastic tallied 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Cardinal (10-3, 2-0 Pac-12). Washington scored just four points in overtime. It trailed 66-60 late when Randle intercepted a Mike Anderson pass and took it coast-to-coast for a layup that sealed the win. Shawn Kemp Jr. had 19 points for Washington (11-3, 0-2), losers in three straight on the heels of 11 wins to begin the season.


(23) Northern Iowa 67, Loyola-Chicago 58

Cedar Falls, IA (SportsNetwork.com) -- Jeremy Morgan scored 18 points and No. 23 Northern Iowa held on to beat Loyola-Chicago 67-58 on Sunday. Deon Mitchell added 13 points in the win and Seth Tuttle scored nine. The Panthers (12-2, 1-1 MVC) got their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the season despite going without a field goal over the last 5 1/2 minutes. It came three days after a loss to Evansville in their league opener, which will likely knock them out of the rankings. Milton Doyle scored 13 points to lead Loyola (11-3, 1-1) and Jay Knuth had 12. The Ramblers had a seven-game winning streak snapped, which included a victory over conference foe Bradley on New Year's Eve.

 

SIUE defeats Tennessee Tech

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Five players scored in double figures Saturday and all 10 players scored at least a point as SIUE men's basketball enjoyed its most lopsided Ohio Valley Conference victory, defeating Tennessee Tech 85-62 at Vadalabene Center.

The Cougars, now 6-7 overall and 2-0 in the OVC, ran their winning streak to five games, the longest for SIUE at the Division I level. The 23-point win is the first victory by SIUE over an OVC team by more than 20 points.

"Overall from start to finish, it's the best we've played," SIUE Head Coach Lennox Forrester said. "Tennessee Tech is a scary team, but our guys played really well."

Tennessee Tech, 8-7 overall and 0-2 in the OVC, took a 7-5 lead with a Torrance Rowe three-pointer 13:55 before halftime. Jake Newton answered with a layup 40 seconds later which spurned an 11-0 SIUE run. The Cougars never trailed again.

SIUE led 35-26 at the half after a three-pointer from Rozell Nunn with just a second remaining before the break.

The Cougars dominated the Golden Eagles in the second half, connecting on 64 percent of their shots. SIUE was 16 of 25 from the field, including 5 for 7 from three-point range.

 

EIU Rallies For Win

CHARLESTON -- Eastern Illinois University once again rallied to pick up a win as the Panthers trailed by 12 points with 7:52 to play Saturday afternoon. EIU tied the game in regulation and then outscored Jacksonville State 13-4 in the overtime period as the Panthers won 59-50.

EIU won its fifth straight game, improving to 8-6 overall, 2-0 in the OVC. EIU will play at Tennessee State Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.


College Basketball Roundup

In college basketball on Sunday, fourth-ranked Wisconsin crushed Northwestern 81-58. Tonight, 13th-ranked Notre Dame is on the road to face 20th-ranked North Carolina at 7:00. Illinois is off until Wednesday when the Illini host Maryland.
