Stew-Stras Downs Windsor, Cumberland Claims Victory at Tri-County Tournament

KANSAS -- Stewardson-Strasburg handed Windsor a 50-36 loss to claim seventh place at the Kansas Tri-County Boys Basketball Tournament Wednesday evening.

The Blue Devils looked like they were headed for the win by nailing eight straight points and taking a 16-11 opening quarter lead. But Stew-Stras came back with an 11-4 second period run and took the lead for the rest of the way when Ted Kessler connected on two free throws with around four minutes before halftime.

Windsor pulled within a point at 28-27 but Stew-Stras remained in control, outscoring the Blue Devils 18-12 in the third period and 10-4 in the final quarter.

T. Kessler finished with 15 points and six rebounds for the Comets. Stew-Stras had beaten Windsor in both hatchet games during the regular season, 60-50 and 56-44. Next season the two schools will co-op in sports. The Comets improve to 3-7.

Windsor was led by Tristan Warner with 14 points. Nic Hutchinson had seven rebounds. The Blue Devils are now 1-10 on the season.

Iin the fifth place contest, Cumberland edged  Westville 37-32. Westville took the early lead with a 10-4 opening quarter run. Cumberland pulled back within three at halftime, 15-12. Mike Wolke's three-point play knotted the score for the Pirates with around three minutes remaining in the third period and the score was tied at 23-23 going into the final quarter.

Westville took a 25-23 lead on free throws to start the fourth quarter but Cumberland went on a 9-0 run and claimed the five-point victory.

No one scored in double figures in the game. Cumberland was led by Houston Napier with nine points and Brandon Shaon with eight. Caleb Brumleve pulled down 14 rebounds for the winners. The Pirates are now 5-9 on the season.

In the champoinship game, Paris edged Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 47-44. The third place contest went to Tri County over Hutsonville/Palestine 68-56.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Austin Flynn (Westville), Landon Williams (Hutsonville/Palestine),  Graham Alspach (Hutsonville-Palestine, Cyrus Furgeson (Tri-County),  Drake Kircher (Tri-County), Jeffrey Martin (Paris), Tyler Schuring (ALAH) and Jeremy Plank (ALAH).
