(Ann Arbor, MI) -- Aubrey Dawkins came off the bench to score 20 points as Michigan outlasted Illinois 73-65 in overtime in the Big Ten opener in Ann Arbor.  Malcolm Hill had 19 points to pace the Fighting Illini, who fell to 10-4 on the season. Illinois plays at 18th-ranked Ohio State on Saturday.


Virginia Survives Challenge From Davidson

Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) -- Anthony Gill amassed career bests of 25 points and 13 rebounds, helping third-ranked Virginia survive a challenge from Davidson and come through with an 83-72 victory. Nineteen of Gill's points came in the second half as the Cavaliers (12-0) overcame an early 12- point deficit to achieve their first 12-0 start since 1981-82. Malcolm Brogdon added 16 points and Darion Atkins had 13 along with 10 rebounds in a game in which Virginia trailed with under 11 1/2 minutes left before eventually pulling away. Davidson (9-2), averaging a Division-I best 87.7 points per game coming in, received 21 points from Jack Gibbs and a 20-point, seven-rebound effort from Tyler Kalinoski. The Wildcats had won seven straight since a 90-72 loss to North Carolina in Charlotte on Nov. 22.


(5) Louisville 63, Long Beach State 48

Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) -- Terry Rozier had 23 points and seven rebounds as No. 5 Louisville got back to its winning ways with a 63-48 decision over Long Beach State. Montrezl Harrell finished with 16 points to help the Cardinals bounce back from their lone loss of the season, Saturday's 58-50 setback at home to top-ranked Kentucky. Louisville shot a season-worst 25.9 percent against the powerhouse Wildcats, but went 21-of-41 from the field (51 percent) and forced 19 Long Beach State turnovers in its final tuneup before making its ACC debut. Harrell hit on 7-of-11 attempts for Louisville (12-1), with Wayne Blackshear contributing 12 points and seven rebounds in the triumph. Branford Jones scored 13 points as the 49ers (5-10) closed out a winless six- game road stretch that contained four matchups against ranked opponents.

 

(10) Utah 85, Carroll 49

Salt Lake City, UT (SportsNetwork.com) -- Jordan Loveridge tallied 14 points in 16 minutes in his return from injury, and 10th-ranked Utah had no trouble with Carroll College in an 85-49 rout at the Huntsman Center. Brekkott Chapman added 11 points and six rebounds against the overmatched Fighting Saints, an NAIA program out of Montana. Chris Reyes finished with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting for Utah (10-2), with Delon Wright had seven assists in the easy
victory. Loveridge, who had missed the Utes' past seven games after undergoing knee surgery nearly a month ago, went 5-of-6 from the field and made three 3- pointers in four tries. Oliver Carr paced Carroll (10-4) with 10 points, while Zach Taylor and Nick Williams had nine each in the lopsided loss.


(12) Maryland 68, Michigan State 66 (2-OT)

East Lansing, MI (SportsNetwork.com) -- Dez Wells scored 16 points and No. 12 Maryland went into Breslin Center and stunned Michigan State 68-66 in a double overtime thriller in the Terrapins' Big Ten debut. Wells, who forced OT with a 3-pointer late in regulation, also had seven rebounds and five assists for Maryland (13-1, 1-0 Big Ten), which moved from the ACC to the Big Ten this summer. Melo Trimble shot 12-of-14 from the foul line for 17 points for the Terps, winners in six straight games.


(13) Kansas 78, Kent State 62

Lawrence, KS (SportsNetwork.com) -- Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 20 points and 13th-ranked Kansas pulled away in the second half for a 78-62 victory over Kent State at Allen Fieldhouse. Perry Ellis tallied 15 points and eight rebounds and Frank Mason III scored 14 for the Jayhawks (10-2), who bounced back from a 77-52 loss to Temple in Philadelphia on Dec. 22. Kansas ran its home winning streak to 14 going back to last season. Jimmy Hall had 13 points with eight rebounds, Khaliq Spicer scored 11 and Kris Brewer had 10 points for the Golden Flashes (8-4), who fell to UTEP, 78-75, in the championship game of the Sun Bowl Invitational in El Paso, Texas, on Dec. 22.


(14) Notre Dame 87, Hartford 60

South Bend, IN (SportsNetwork.com) -- Demetrius Jackson scored 18 points and Pat Connaughton supplied 16 in 14th-ranked Notre Dame's 87-60 win over Hartford on Tuesday. Jerian Grant and Zach Auguste each chipped in with 15 points for the Irish (13-1), who have won nine straight. Mark Nwakamma paced the Hawks (7-6) with 16 points to go along with six rebounds and Yolonzo Moore added 12 points in the loss.


(17) West Virginia 82, Virginia Tech 51

Morgantown, WV (SportsNetwork.com) -- Juwan Staten totaled 18 points as No. 17 West Virginia eased past Virginia Tech, 82-51, on Tuesday. Gary Browne added 12 points for the Mountaineers (12-1), who received nine points and 11 rebounds from Devin Williams. Adam Smith and Satchel Pierce notched 10 points apiece for the Hokies (8-5), whose four-game win streak came to a crashing halt.


(19) North Carolina 86, William & Mary 64

Chapel Hill, NC (SportsNetwork.com) -- J.P. Tokoto finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds to lift No. 19 North Carolina to an 86-64 victory over William & Mary on Tuesday. Marcus Paige supplied 14 points and six assists and Nate Britt netted 11 for the Tar Heels (10-3), who have won four straight games heading into their ACC opener at Clemson on Saturday. Daniel Dixon paced the Tribe (6-5) with 20 points, while Marcus Thornton scored 17 in the setback. North Carolina has now won eight straight games against William & Mary since the 1977-78 season.


Iowa 71, (20) Ohio State 65

Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) -- Jarrod Uthoff scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and handed out five assists as Iowa built an early lead and held off No. 20 Ohio State, 71-65, in the Big Ten opener for both programs. Uthoff and Aaron White both scored 11 points in a first half that saw the Hawkeyes (10-4, 1-0 Big Ten) jump out to a 12-point lead they never relinquished. White finished with 18 points and nine rebounds for Iowa, which came into Columbus last January and snapped a seven-game skid at Value City Arena. Sam Thompson led Ohio State (11-3, 0-1) with 17 points, while leading scorer D'Angelo Russell shot just 4-of-16 from the field for 13 points in his Big Ten debut.


(22) Baylor 92, Norfolk State 51

Waco, TX (SportsNetwork.com) -- Royce O'Neale put on an impressive shooting display in the second half and finished with 23 points to lead 22nd-ranked Baylor to a 92-51 rout of Norfolk State on Tuesday. O'Neale was 7-of-9 from the floor and hit 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range, while Rico Gathers, Taurean Prince and Al Freeman all scored 13 points for the Bears (11-1), who have won six straight games. Jeff Short netted 23 points and D'Shon Taylor supplied 11 points and six rebounds for the Spartans (9-6), who had their three-game winning streak come to an end.
