Dieterich, Newton Claim Dieterich Tourney Titles

DIETERICH -- The Movin' Maroons of Dieterich High School captured the championship of their own boys basketball tournament Monday evening.

Dieterich defeated Arcola 68-54 in the championship contest. The Maroons held a 34-20 halftime lead. Arcola made a comeback bid in the third period with a 19-12 run but Dieterich got back on track in the final period with a 22-15 surge.

L. Niemerg tallied 23 points while A. Bohnhoff scored 19 for the Maroons. Niemerg hit six field goals, including one three-pointer and was 10 of 11 at the line. Bohnhoff connected on six field goals, half of those from three--point range, and was four of four at the line.

In the third place contest, Oblong downed Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 64-45.

The fifth place game went to Red Hill (Bridgeport) over Newton 55-49 in overtime. The Eagles held a 16-14 first half lead. Red Hill came back with an 11-8 third period run to lead 25-24 going into the final quarter. Newton came back to knot the score, sending the game into overtime. In the overtime period Red Hill broke loose with a 15-9 run.

The game was a walk to the free throw line as Red Hill connected on 28 of 41 while Newton was 13 of 21.

Newton was led by Harris with 17 points.

The seventh place contest went to North Clay (Louisville) in a close win over Beecher City 40-39. The Eagles held an 8-6 first quarter lead and led 18-12 at halftime. Beecher City still led 30-18 going into the final period when North Clay started connecting for a 22-9 final period run to pull out the one-point victory.

Gullidge led North Clay with 11 points while Hartsey chipped in with 10. Beecher City was led by Rexroad with 14.

Named to the All-Tournament Team were Alex Bohnhoff (Dieterich) as MVP, Hartsey (North Clay), Mayhew (Oblong), Maus (Oblong), Murray (Red Hill), Boehne (Christ Our Rock Lutheran), Aherin (Dieterich), Kollin Seaman (Arcola) and Wyatt Fishel (Arcola).

Iin the girls tournament, Newton claimed first place by downing host Dieterich 57-41. The Eagles and Maroons were tied at 6-6 after the opening quarter. Newton then kicked it into high gear with a 17-7 second period run and 20-10 third quarter surge.

Ariel Richards finished with 26 points, hitting 11 field goals, which included three trifectas and a free throw. Emiliy Kerner added 10 points.

Dieterich was led by Mallorie Vahling with 23 points on eight field goals and seven of 10 at the line.

The third place game went to Casey-Westfield over Arcola 53-39.

In the fifth place contest, Brownstown/St. Elmo downed South Central 59-51. The Cougars of South Central held a 19-16 first quarter lead and led 31-26 at halftime. BSE then came back with a 21-10 run and put the game away.

Morgan Brown scored 19 and Emiliy Bone 12 for the winners. Abby Hahn led South Central with 19.

The seventh place game went to North Clay (Louisville) over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 48-41. The Cardinals jumped out to a 29-21 halftime lead and CHBC couldn't overcome that first half deficit.

Carrsan Bible led the scoring with 18 points while Taylor Jones added 10. CHBC was led by Chandler Ward with 15.
