Bulldogs Pick Up Win Saturday at Vandalia Tourney

VANDALIA -- Effingham St. Anthony captured a victory over Maroa-Forsyth in the Vandalia Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday and moved its record to 3-0 in Pool B.

St. Anthony stepped out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead but Maroa-Forsyth came back to knot the score at 29-29 at halftime. Maroa then took a 39-38 lead going into the final period. St. Anthony came back with an 18-11 run to pull out a 56-50 victory.

Derek Rios was the lone Bulldog player in double figures with 10. Andrew Gardewine and Nick Grunloh had four rebounds each.

In the opening game Saturday, South Central edged Pana 45-43. Pana held a 30-19 halftime lead but the Cougars came back and held the Panthers scoreless in the third quarter to take a 31-30 lead going into the final period. South Central then had a 14-13 edge.

Harmeier tallied 13 and Peters 11 for the winners.

Flora claimed a 67-52 win over St. Elmo/Brownstown in the next contest. Flora broke a 10-10 opening quarter tie with a 21-9 second period run and never looked back. St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Maxey with 14 points.

Altamont was then a 62-55 winner over Shelbyville in the third game of the day. The Indians led 31-14 at halftime then had to hold off a second half charge by the Rams.

Armstrong scored 20, K. Wolff 12 and Mayhaus 11 for the Indians.

Altamont then fell in the final game of the day against Pana 71-65. The Indians remained close, trailing 28-24 at halftime then had a 20-16 third period run to tie the score at 44-44 going into the final period. The Panthers rallied for a 27-21 run to pull out the win.

The Indians were led by Mayhaus with 22 and Armstrong with 12.

In the other games Saturday, Flora edged Vandalia 68-66 and Greenville bounced Shelbyville 64-38.

There were six more games on tap today and the tourney will finish out Tuesday with the finals starting at 2 p.m. and the championship scheduled for 8 p.m.
