Dieterich Playing For Both Boys, Girls Championships At Own Tourneys

DIETERICH -- Dieterich High School will be playing for championships in its own boys and girls basketball tournaments tonight.

Dieterich will face Arcola at 8 p.m. for the title in the boys tournament, while the Movin' Maroons will take on Newton at 6 p.m. in the girls meet.

In Saturday action in the boys tournament, Red Hill (Bridgeport) defeated North Clay (Louisville) 49-31 in the first game of the day. Hartsey led North Clay with 15 points.

In the second contest, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran defeated Beecher City 60-37. Beecher City was led by Stefanski with nine points.

The third contest was claimed by Oblong over North Clay 65-48. The Cardinals had two players in double figures, Hartsey with 16 and Gullidge with 10.

Newton then defeated Beecher City 50-37 with a 22-10 opening quarter lead. Harris scored 12 for the winners. The Eagles were led by Harder with 11.

Arcola downed Oblong 52-36. In the final game of the day, Dieterich bounced Newton 59-24. The Maroons held a 37-17 halftime lead. Aherin scored 18 and Bohnhoff 10 for the winners. Harris led Newton with 12.

Today's games find Beecher City against North Clay at 1 p.m. for seventh place, Newton meeting Red Hill at 2:30 p.m. for fifth place, Oblong taking on Christ Our Rock Lutheran at 4 p.m. for third place and Dieterich facing Arcola at 8 p.m. for the championship.

In the girls tournament Saturday, South Central defeated North Clay 53-43. The Cougars held a 32-24 halftime lead. Keely Smith tallied 18 for the Cougars while Abby Hahn chipped in with 17. Hahn hit only one field goal and connected on 16 of 22 free throws. North Clay was led by Carrsan Bible with 17 and Taylor Jones with 14.

In the second game, Casey-Westfield downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 62-28. The Warriors held a 25-10 opening quarter lead and never looked back. Chelsea Cox and Conner Cutright scored 21 points each for the winners while Mackenzie Morgan added 10. CHBC was led by Chandler Ward and Skylar Morrison with eight each.

Arcola downed South Central 41-22 in the third contest. Arcola took the big first quarter lead 13-3. South Central was led by Hahn with 11 points.

Brownstown/St. Elmo then beat CHBC 48-28. Audriana Pruett sccored 14 and Morgan Borwn 11 as the Bombers held a 23-9 halftime lead and outscored CHBC 25-21 in the second half. CHBC was led by Ward with nine.

Newton claimed a 47-35 win over Arcola in the next contest. Emily Kerner scored 19 and Grace Hartrich 12 for the winners. The Eagles had a 15-4 opening quarter lead.

In the final game of the day, Dieterich edged Brownstown/St. Elmo 47-42. With three players in double digits, the Maroons broke an 18-18 halftime tie with an 8-6 third quarter edge then outscored BSE 21-18 in the final period. Courtney Flach scored 15, Mallorie Vahling 14 and Elizabeth Abbott 12. BSE was led by Brown with 11.

Today's finals have CHBC against North Clay at 1 p.m. for seventh place, BSE taking on South Central at 2:30 for fifth place, Casey-Westfield meeting Arcola at 4 for third place and the championship will feature Dieteirch facing Newton at 6.
