Girls Basketball Tournaments In Abundance

Girls high school basketball tournaments are in abundance around the area this Christmas holiday season. Most will open play Friday and run through Monday of next week.

Effingham will be competing in the 22nd Annual Charleston Holiday Tournament. The Hearts will compete in the Gold Pool with Charleston JV, Paris, Rantoul and Taylorville. EHS opens play Friday at 10:30 a.m. against Charleston JV. EHS will then take on Taylorville at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and meet Rantoul at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The final pool game for the Hearts will be Monday against Paris at 9 a.m.

The tournament comes to a close Monday with the fifth place game at 4 p.m., the third place game at 5:30 p.m. and the championship at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs of Effingham St. Anthony will take part in the Mattoon Christmas Tournament. St. Anthony takes on Mattoon at 11:30 a.m. Friday and will play again at 6 p.m. against Vandalia. In Saturday action, St. Anthony meets Decatur MacArthur at 1 p.m.

The tournament closes out Monday with the seventh place game at 3 p.m., the fifth place game at 4:30, the third place contest at 6 and the championship at 7.

The Dieterich Holiday Tournament will have six area teams competing. In Pool A are Dieterich, Brownstown/St. Elmo, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and Casey-Westfield. In Pool B are Newton, South Central, North Clay (Louisville) and Arcola.

The first contest for CHBC and Dieterich will be Saturday at 10 a.m. against each other. South Central then takes on Newton at 11:30 a.m. North Clay faces Arcola at 1 p.m. and Brownstown/St. Elmo squares off against Casey-Westfield at 2:30 p.m.

The tournament continues Saturday with the first game at 10 a.m. and the final scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The meet comes to a close Monday with the seventh place game at 1 p.m., the fifth place at 2:30, the third place at 4 and the championship at around 6, approximately 30 minutes following the boys' third place game.

Teutopolis will be competing in the Edwardsville Tiger Holiday Classic. The Wooden Shoes are in Pool A with McClure North, Jacksonville and Edwardsville. T-town will meet Jacksonville at 11:30 a.m. Friday and Edwardsville at 6:30 p.m. Saturday's final pool game for T-town will be at 10 a.m. against McClure North. The pool winners will meet for the championship at 8 p.m. Third place is at 6 p.m. while fifth place is 7 p.m. and seventh place 5:30 p.m.

Neoga is the lone area squad competing in the Monticello Sages Holiday Hoopla. The Indians compete in the Purple Pool along with Argenta-Oreana, Gibson City and Monticello.

The Indians' first game will be Friday against Gibson City at 11:30 a.m. followed by Monticello at 6 p.m. The Indians then face Argenta-Oreana at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The tourney comes to a close Monday with the championship scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
