EHS, Newton Drop Games, Stew-Stras Wins Blue Hatchet Contest

Mount Zion came calling and handed Effingham a 64-52 Apollo Conference boys basketball loss Friday evening.

The Braves took a 15-13 first period lead as Jordan Horath knocked in two three-pointers and finished with eight points in the period. Mount Zion was ahead by three at halftime, going to the free throw line and scoring nine points and only two baskets.

In the third period, Effingham came back to pull within 37-36. The Hearts hit five free throws and were three of six from the field. But the Braves rallied and outscored the Hearts 27-16 in the final period.

Four players scored in double figures for Mount Zion as Charles Kuhle had 18, Payton Grinestaff 13, Austin Thacker 12 and Horath 12. EHS was led by Braydon Bone with 13 and Grant Wolfe with 12.

At Windsor

In the final Blue Hatchet contest between Stewardson-Strasburg and Windsor, the Comets took a 56-44 victory. The two schools' basketball teams will merge next year.

The two schools were tied after the opening quarter 16-16. Stew-Stras Mitch Jones scored 11 of his team's 16 points. Tristan Warner tallied seven of his team's points.

Stew-Stras then held a 26-24 halftime lead before outscoring the Blue Devils 14-7 in the third period and 16-13 in the final quarter.

The Comets were led by Jones with 21 points while Josh Overbeck scored 13 and Ted Kessler 12.

Windsor was led by Warner with 18. and Mitch Haddock added nine.

Robinson bounced Newton 56-27 in Friday competition. The Maroons jumped out to an 18-4 opening quarter lead and the game was put in the win column.

Robinson had three players hit double diigits, Jason Richart with 13, Dylan Dirks with 11 and Brody Scott with 10. Newton was led by Brock Mammoser with seven.
