Mount Zion Beats EHS, Area Girls Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Mount Zion in Apollo Conference girls basketball play Monday evening and the Hearts fell 59-48.

The two teams were knotted at 12-12 after one quarter. The Braves edged out to a 29-27 lead at halftime. Mount Zion then had a 16-7 third quarter run. The two teams then played to a 14-14 final period tie.

"We showed some really good stretches of play, especially in the first half," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "We just really lacked intensity iun the second half for whatever reason. Mount Zion is very balanced and plays really well as a team. I think we made a big step forward tonight. We have to find more plays per quarter and we will start having some really good things happen."

Jantzen Michael had 15 points whilel Maddy Field added 14 for the Hearts. EHS is now 0-3 in the conference, 3-5 overall.

At Newton

Newton picked up a 46-24 Little Illini Conference win over Red Hill (Bridgeport) Monday evening.

The Eagles edged out to a 9-2 opening quarter lead and led 25-10 at halftime. Richards scored 12 for the winners while Hartrich chipped in with 10.

Newton is now 3-1 in the conference, 8-4 overall.

At Neoga

Madison Butler pushed into the 1,000 career point column as Neoga beat Cumberland 67-16 in a non-conference contest Monday.

Butler connected on 10 field goals and a free throw for 22 points. She had a three-pointer. Biutler also had eight steals and seven assists. Leading Neoga in scoring was E.C. Thies with 26 points.

Neoga is now 10-2 on the season while Cumberland drops to 0-10.

Ramsey had a big second half in downing Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 37-25. Ramsey edged out to a 14-13 halftime lead then had a 23-12 second half run.

S. Kimberlin led the winners with 14 points while Zimmerman chipped in with 13. CHBC was led by Chandler Ward with 11 points.

Woodlawn handed South Central a 48-24 non-conference loss. Woodlawn held a 28-11 halftime lead and outscored the Cougars 20-13 in the second half.

Lexy Knox tallied 15 and Kiara Lueking 13 for the winners. South Central was led by Keely Smith with 12.
