Eighth Grade Mustang Girls to Play for State Championship

The Effingham eighth-grade girls basketball team will be playing for the state championship Thursday.

The Effingham Mustangs are headed to the championship game of the 8-4A State Girls Basketball Tournament.

Effingham reached the title game with a 39-29 win over Bloomington Evans in quarterfinal action Saturday morning, and a 39-22 victory over Edwardsville Liberty in the semifinal game Saturday evening.

The Mustangs won the quarterfinal game against a previously undefeated Evans team. Abby Weis scored 11 of her game-high 15 points in the first quarter, all 11 points scored by the Mustangs in the period. Effingham was up 11-8 after one quarter, 18-15 at halftime, and 28-22 after three quarters. Effingham outscored Evans 11-7 in the fourth quarter.

Besides Weis' 15 points, Carsyn Fearday scored 11 points, Skyler Schafer seven, and Madison Buscher and Miranda Fox three each.

In the semifinal game, the Mustangs' defense helped them to a lead. Effingham was up 12-6 after one quarter, 18-6 at halftime as the Mustangs pitched a shutout in the second quarter, and 27-9 after three quarters. Liberty finally outscored Effingham 13-12 in the fourth quarter, but the game had already been decided.

Miranda Fox paced the Mustangs' attack with 17 points, while Carsyn Fearday and Abby Weis each scored eight points, and Kiyah Kuhlman, Skyler Schafer and Jessica Herboth each scored two points.

Effingham is now 22-1 on the season. The Lady Mustangs will take on undefeated Minooka (24-0) for the state championship Thursday night at 7:30pm at Rochester Junior High School.
