St. Anthony Makes it a Happy Homecoming w/Comeback Victory

The St. Anthony Bulldogs didn't start well, but finished great, while the St. Elmo/Brownstown Eagles started great, but didn't finish well.

That was the difference in a 52-47 St. Anthony win Friday night in boys high school basketball at the Enlow Center. The Bulldogs made it a happy Homecoming in a game heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  

St. Elmo/Brownstown came out all guns blazing, hitting six of their first seven shots on the way to an 18-6 lead after one quarter. The lead stretched to 14 before the Bulldogs began a sizzling comeback, eventually tying the game at 25-25 before SEB stretched their lead back to 32-27 at halftime. The Bulldogs outpointed the Eagles 14-10 in the third quarter, but still trailed 42-41 at the end of the period.

St. Anthony finally rallied to take their first lead of the game with 7:42 left in the fourth quarter, but it was back and forth for a few more minutes before the Bulldogs took the lead for good. St. Anthony outscored SEB 11-5 in the final period to post the five-point win.

St. Anthony shot 41% from the field, making 19 of 46 shots. The Bulldogs made seven of 14 foul shots, hit on six of 19 three-point tries, grabbed 22 rebounds, and committed just six turnovers in the game.

SEB made 15 of 34 shots for 44%, made 11 of 16 free throws, turned the ball over 14 times, and grabbed just 20 rebounds. The Eagles made six of 10 three-point tries.

Nick Grunloh came off the bench to lead St. Anthony with 14 points, while Andrew Gardewine added 13 points. Also for St. Anthony: James Kabbes 9, Kyle Hartke 8, Braden Puckett 5, Chandler Martelli 2, and Zach Gardewine 1.

Andrew Gardewine led with 8 rebounds, while Hartke grabbed 5.

Jo Jo Maxey led SEB with 17 points including four three-pointers. Kyle Hardimon added 12 points. Also for SEB: Landon Feezel 8, Dylan Brooks 7, Brenden Noll 2, and Klayton Kroll 1.

St. Anthony improved to 4-3 with the win, while SEB drops to 2-3.

St. Anthony won the JV game 42-41. Alex Beesley led St. Anthony with 11 points, while Lewis Brown paced SEB with 14 points.
