EHS Falls To Mattoon, Girls Area Basketball Roundup

Effingham High School played host to Mattoon and fell to the Green Wave 48-36 Thursday evening in girls basketball competition.

Mattoon edged out to a 15-12 opening quarter lead as five players scored. Jantzen Michael knocked in five points for the Hearts. The Green Wave continued its barrage with a 15-6 second period to lead 30-18 at halftime.

The Hearts played the Green Wave even in the second half but couldn't overcome that first half deficit. Michael led EHS with nine points.

Effingham St. Anthony played host to Mattoon's junior varsity contest and won 40-24 Thursday evening.

At Farina

Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed a National Trail Conference win over South Central 41-28.

The Cougars held an 8-6 first period lead but Brownstown/St. Elmo came back with an 11-3 run to lead 17-11 at halftime. The Bombers then had a 24-17 second half lead.

Brownstown/St. Elmo had eight players score in the contest led by Fitch with nine. South Central was led by Abby  Hahn with nine.

"The girls played hard tonight," said South Central Coach Gary Kapper. "Defensively we hustled and made some plays. Offensively we moved the ball well to get a lot of open shots but they just did not fall. We had a lot more players involved in our offense tonight which is what we want to have."

The Cougars drop to 1-2 in the NTC, 3-5 overall.

Dieterich had four players score in double figures in trouncing North Clay (Louisville) 72-27 Thursday evening.

Courtney Flach led the way with 24 points while Mallorie Vahling had a double-double with 20 points and 21 rebounds. Elizabeth Abbott and Kelsey Webb scored 12 points each. Flach led in assists with four and steals with four.

North Clay was led by Carrsan Bible with 12 points.

Dieterich improves to 9-4 overall.

Okaw Valley improved its record to 7-1 with a 45-37 win over Altamont. Altamont took a 10-9 opening quarter lead and led 19-13 at halftime. Okaw Valley pulled back within 26-24 going into the final quarter then had a 21-11 run.
