The Effingham seventh-grade Mustangs played their best game of the year but lost a heartbreaker to visiting Centralia 49-48 in overtime Monday evening.

The Mustangs trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter but were able to tie the game with a second remaining with a layup by Parker Snow. The Mustangs got up earlier in the overtime but after a free throw by Centralia, the Mustangs found themselves down by two with seven seconds remaining. However, Sam Thompson was fouled with a second remaining in the game. He calmly sank all three free throws to give the Mustangs a one point lead.

In the excitement of the moment, a few Effingham players ran onto the court to celebrate. The Mustangs received a technical and Centralia's Blakemore sank both foul shots for the victory.

Effingham was led in scoring by Parker Siner and Austin Waldhoff with 11 each and Thompson chiping in with 10. The Mustangs now stand at 3-7 on the season.

In the eighth-grade contest, Effingham picked up a 48-30 victory over Centralia. The Mustangs stepped out to an 11-3 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 26-5 at halftime.

Wolfe tallied 28 points, had eight steals and nine rebounds for the Mustangs. Rich added eight points and seven boards.

Effingham is now 9-1 on the season. The Mustangs to Mattoon Thursday.
