Big Second Half Lifts Hearts to Win at Charleston

The third quarter was the difference in the Effingham Hearts' 50-37 win at Charleston Friday night. The Apollo Conference contest was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.  

After an ice cold second quarter for both teams, the Hearts got a couple of shots to fall after halftime and that led to a 20-point third quarter. Effingham went from one point down early in the period to 13 points ahead by the end of the quarter.

After Charleston took 3-0 and 6-3 leads in the opening minutes of the game, the Hearts began pushing the ball inside and eventually led after one quarter, 13-9. Then came the second period, during which Charleston outscored Effingham 5-4. The Hearts clung to a 17-14 lead at halftime. Then, Charleston pulled ahead briefly 18-17 before the Hearts found success pounding the ball inside and began to pull away, aided by several Charleston turnovers. Effingham outscored the Trojans 20-10 in the period to lead 37-24 after three quarters. The Hearts pushed the advantage to 17 points before settling for the 13-point victory.

Effingham shot 55% from the field, making 23 of 42 shots, including two of seven from three-point range. The Hearts committed 11 turnovers and pulled down 23 rebounds. Charleston made just 14 of 39 shots for 35%, including five of 13 three-pointers, hit on four of eight foul shots, turned the ball over 14 times and grabbed just 16 rebounds.

Jared Minor led a balanced scoring attack for Effingham with a season-high 14 points. Michael Carie scored 13 points, Grant Wolfe added 10 points, and Braydon Bone scored nine points. Jacob Donaldson and Reed Schafer each scored two points. Minor also led Effingham with seven rebounds, as did Reed Schafer, Carie, Bone and Wolfe each had five, Frankie Kasdorf three, and Zerrusen and Donaldson one each.

Effingham is now 4-1 on the season, while Charleston drops to 2-4.

Effingham won the JV game, 58-44. For Effingham: Jacob Donaldson 12, Mason Hull 11, Kyle Morrow 10, Brady Scott 10, and Trevor Kreke 9. It was the season opener for the JV Hearts.
