NEWTON -- Effingham High School fell to Newton 40-28 to finish second in the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament Saturday.

The Hearts fell behind 11-6 in the opening quarter and trailed 25-19 at halftime. Newton then had a 15-9 second half run.

Richards scored 17 and Hartrich 12 for the champions. Jantzen Michael tallied nine for Effingham.

"This was a tough one as we just made too many mistakes," said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. "The worst part is we played through it and tied the game up in the third quarter only to have three chances to take the lead and came up empty. We gave them free points on turnovers and we never recovered.

"Congratulations to Newton. They played four good games. We just have to go back to work and keep improving."
