Dieterich Champions at C'land Tourney, C-H Second at M.G. Tournament

GREENUP -- Dieterich High School downed Chrisman 51-45 to claim the championship of the Cumberland Thanksgiviing Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

Chrisman took an 8-4 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back with an 18-5 second period run and took control of the contest.

Bohnhoff tallied 18 for the Movin' Maroons while Aherin chipped in with 10 points.

In the third place contest, Cumberland was a 49-39 winner over Newton. The Pirates stepped out to a 10-6 opening quarter lead and led 19-12 at halftime. Cumberland continued its scoring run with a 13-7 third period. Newton made a comeback bid in the final period only to fall short.

Brandon Shaon scored 11 while Houston Napier added 10 points for the Pirates. Brock Mammoser led Newton with 19 points.

In the fifth place contest, Hutsonville/Palestine won over Charleston 61-51. The seventh-place game went to Oblong over Neoga 66-39.

Oblong led 33-24 at halftime then had an 33-15 second half run for the win. Laino tallied 16, Maus 13 and Mayhew 12 for the winners.

Neoga was led ty Trevor Moore with 12 and Corey Kersey with 11.

Mulberry Grove Tournament

Cowden-Herrick captured second place in the Mulberry Grove Round Robin Turkey Tournament Saturday.

Winning the tournament was Odin with a 4-1 record followed by Cowden-Herrick 3-2, Sandoval 3-2, Patoka 2-3, Mulberry Grove 2-3 and Ramsey 1-4.

In Friday play, Cowden-Herrick beat Sandoval 78-64, Odin downed Patoka 84-73 and Mulberry Grove defeated Ramsey 58-45.

The Hornets took a 20-14 first period lead and led 37-24 at halftime over Sandoval. Three players hit double figures. Konner Blackerby tallied 26 points while Colton Burrus added 20 and Kyle Black 12.

In Saturday action, Sandoval edged Ramsey 53-51, Patoka won over Cowden-Herrick 76-60 and Odin downed Mulberry Grove 67-47.

Patoka took a 23-13 first period lead on the Hornets then held off a final period challenge by Cowden-Herrick for the 76-60 win.

Dylan Barnes scored 18 while Blackerby added 12 and Burrus 10 for the Hornets.
