Kentucky Pulls Away From Providence

Lexington,  KY (SportsNetwork.com) -- Kentucky and Providence were both undefeated coming into Sunday's meeting at Rupp Arena, and it was virtually even for 20 minutes before the top-ranked Wildcats pulled away. Willie Cauley-Stein and Karl-Anthony Towns each recorded 11 points and six rebounds, and Kentucky held the Friars to 16 points after the break en route to a 58-38 win. The Wildcats (7-0) saw five other players finish with six points, including Andrew Harrison, who added four assists and four steals.


Duke Downs Army

In college basketball on Sunday, Jahlil Okafor scored 21 points to lead second-ranked Duke to a 93-73 win over Army.


#9 Texas Sinks #22 UConn

(Storrs, Connecticut) -- Jonathan Holmes sunk the game-winner three-pointer with three seconds left to lift number-nine Texas to a 55-54 win over 22nd-ranked UConn at Gampel Pavillion. Holmes finished with 13 points while Javan Felix and Demarcus Holland each chipped in 10 points. The Longhorns improve to 6-and-0 with the victory. They take on UT-Arlington Tuesday.

 

EIU Downs SIU

NICEVILLE, Fla. – Eastern Illinois held Southern University without a field goal for the first 11:10 of the game as the Panthers picked up a 54-43 win in the final game of the Emerald Coast Classic on Saturday afternoon.

EIU improved to 2-5 and will host Ball State on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Lantz Arena.  Southern University dropped to 1-6.

Josh Piper hit a 3-pointer to open the game with Southern hitting one of two at the free throw line.   EIU would go on a 21-0 run until the Jaguars knocked down their first field goal at the 11:10 mark.


Women's Basketball

CHICAGO – Eastern Illinois turned the ball over 16 times leading to 12 Loyola-Chicago points as the Ramblers walked away with a 63-52 win over the Panthers on Saturday afternoon at the Gentile Arena.

EIU drops to 2-4 on the year and will host Omaha next Friday at 6 p.m. in Lantz Arena.  Loyola improved to 2-3.

The Panthers were cold from the field to open the game as Phylicia Johnson hit a 3-pointer with 13:17 to play for their first field goal.   The Ramblers answered with a 3-pointer by Bailey Farley.

Johnson made her second 3-pointer of the game with 11:40 to play in the first half to bring EIU to within two points at 12-10.  Johnson would finish with 11 points for the Panthers.
