Illinois Bashes Brown, College Scores

(Champaign, IL  -- Rayvonte Rice had 15 points and 10 rebouns as Illinois bashed Brown 89-68 as part of the Las Vegas Invitational.

Aaron Crosby had a team-high 18 points for the Illini, who improved to 4-0 on the season. Illinois will face Indiana State in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Missouri Mauled By #4 Arizona

(Lahaina, HI) -- Montaque Gill-Caesar netted 13 points but Missouri lost 72-53 to fourth-ranked Arizona in the EA Sports Maui Invitational. Jonathan Williams the Third and Keith Shamburger added 11 points each for the Tigers, who fell to 2-2. Mizzou meets Purdue today.

Portland State 90, SIUE 87

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Seniors Kris Davis and Keaton Jackson combined for 41 points Monday, but Portland State outlasted SIUE men's basketball 90-87 at the Stott Center.

SIUE fell to 1-3 and has lost three in a row. Portland State improved to 3-0 with the win.

"This was a tough one for our guys," SIUE Head Coach Lennox Forrester said. "Tonight we came close, but close doesn't cut it. We have to figure out ways to continue to improve as a basketball team and try to win the next one."

The game went to overtime tied 82-82. Portland State took a four-point (88-84) lead after a free throw from Tiegbe Bamba with 29 seconds left in the overtime period. Donivine Stewart drove to the basket, scored and drew a foul. Stewart missed the free throw, but was fouled on the rebound. Stewart hit one of two free throws to pull the Cougars within one at 88-87. Tim Douglas was fouled on the ensuing possession for PSU and connected on both free throws for the final margin.

In a true back-and-forth game, the game featured eight lead changes and the score was tied eight times.

EIU's Johnson Named OVC Freshman of Week

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. -- Eastern Illinois guard Cornell Johnston has been named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for his performance in games last week against Eureka College, UC Davis and Cincinnati.   The Panthers return to action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. game at Creighton.
 
In three games last week Johnston averaged 9.3 points, 6.0 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 steals/game while hitting 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from the field, 60 percent (6-of-10) from 3-point range and 100 percent (2-of-2) from the free throw line. He had 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds against UC Davis and followed that with nine points, three assists and two rebounds at Cincinnati. The freshman began the week with nine points and eight assists in a win over Eureka College; in that contest he hit 3-of-4 3-pointers. Johnston currently ranks fourth in the OVC in assists (5.0/game) and fourth in the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage knocking down 8-of-14 this year.
