The St. Anthony Bulldogs began their 2014-15 campaign Monday night with a one-point win over the Mattoon Green Wave, 47-46. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com

The Bulldogs helped open the boys high school basketball season and their own Thanksgiving Tournament. In the opening game, Mt. Zion soundly defeated Robinson, 74-52.

St. Anthony took an early seven-point lead in the contest, but Mattoon came back to lead 18-17 at halftime. The Bulldogs played a great third quarter, outscoring the Green Wave 15-7 to lead 32-25 heading to the fourth quarter. Mattoon was able to hit some threes and draw closer. The Bulldogs managed a 47-44 lead and after a timeout Mattoon still had a chance to tie the game, but the Green Wave took it in for a layup with no timeouts remaining rather than put up a three and the Bulldogs escaped with the one-point victory.

Connor Greene kept the Bulldogs afloat offensively throughout the first three periods, scoring 18 of his game-high 21 points. Jeff Niebrugge scored nine points, eight in the fourth quarter, while Kyle Hartke added eight points, all from the foul line. Derek Rios scored four points , Nick Grunloh hit a three-pointer, and Andrew Gardewine scored two points.

Jack Raboin scored 14 points to pace Mattoon.

The Bulldogs shot 42% from the field, making 15 of 36 shots and added 13 of 18 foul shots. St. Anthony committed 14 turnovers, but only four in the second half and only one in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs grabbed 21 rebounds to 14 for a taller Mattoon squad, and made four of 13 three-point attempts.

Mattoon made 17 of 37 shots for 46%, made six of nine foul shots, turned the ball over 13 times and made six of 17 three-point tries.

At the tournament Tuesday night, the Effingham Hearts will play their season opener in the middle of three contests, taking on Champaign St. Thomas More at 6:30pm. In the 5pm opener, Mt. Zion will take on Breese Central and at 8 pm, Clifton Central takes on Robinson. We'll have the Hearts' game on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
