Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament Deluxe Set To Open Tonight

There won't be reason a basketball junkie can't get his or her fix this week as Thanksgiving boys and girls basketball tournaments are set to get underway around the area.

For girls, the Bob Kerans Basketball Tournament at Newton will begin tonight with Effingham, Flora, Newton, Cumberland and Altamont competing in round robin fashion.

The Cowden-Herrick Round Robin Thanksgiving Tournament begins Tuesday and teams entered include the host squad along with North Clay (Louisville),  Dieterich, Brownstown/St. Elmo, Neoga and Ramsey.

Two tournaments that began last week but will finish out Friday and Saturday are the Taylorville Thanksgiving Holiday Tournament in which the Effingham St. Anthony Bulldogs are competing. The Bulldogs went 3-0 last week and won the Purple Pool and will return to action Friday against host Taylorville at 8 p.m. and Saturday in the finals.

Teutopolis went 2-1 in the 14th Annual Salem Thanksgiving Tournament and will next face host Salem at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. If the Wooden Shoes advance, they will play for the championship at 8:30 p.m. If the squad loses, it will play for third place at 7 p.m.

In boys action, the Effingham St. Anthony Turkey Tournament is scheduled to begin tonight as the Bulldogs face Mattoon at 7:30 p.m. Robinson takes on Mount Zion in the opener at 6 p.m.

Effingham will square off against Champaign St. Thomas More at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. In Pool A are St. Anthony, Mattoon, Effingham and St. Thomas More. In Pool B are Clifton Central, Breese Central, Robinson and Mount Zion.

The Cumberland Thanksgivng Tournament opens tonight with four games on tap. In Pool A are Cumberland, Newton, Neoga and Oblong playing at the high school gym. In Pool B are Charleston, Chrisman, Dieterich and Hutsonville/Palestine playing at the middle school gym.

The Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament, which also begins tonight, will include teams from Cowden-Herrick, Odin, Ramsey, Patoka, Sandoval and host Mulberry Grove.

Teutopolis will be competing in the Capital Classic which doesn't get underway until Friday with the Shoes facing Fairfield at 12:30 p.m. and Olney at 6:30 p.m. The tournament concludes Saturday as T-town will meet Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 10 a.m. The finals are set to begin at 3:30 p.m.
