Wichita State Dismantles Newman

Wichita, KS (SportsNetwork.com) - Ron Baker had a game-high 18 points as No. 11 Wichita State dismantled Newman, 105-57, on Sunday. Baker made 6-of-9 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, Darius Carter scored 15 points and Fred VanVleet chipped in 12 for the Shockers (3-0), who won their national-best 34th consecutive regular-season game. Reggie Baker paced Newman with 14 points and Cortrael Colbert finished with 12 points and four rebounds in defeat. The Jets, who won their first two games, won't have the loss count against the their record since they counted it as an exhibition matchup.

 

West Virginia 78, (17) Connecticut 68

San Juan, PR (SportsNetwork.com) - Juwan Staten scored 23 points and West Virginia stayed unbeaten with a 78-68 upset of No. 17 Connecticut in the finals of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off. Jonathan Holton and Daxter Miles Jr. scored 10 points apiece for WVU (5-0), which became the first team to take down the defending National Champs this season. The Mountaineers beat George Mason and Boston College to reach the championship in San Juan. Turnovers and 3-point shooting plagued UConn (3-1), which had won nine straight games dating back to last season. Freshman Daniel Hamilton had eight of the 19 Huskies turnovers, and they shot just 3-for-17 from behind the arc as a team. Ryan Boatright scored 17 points and Hamilton had 15 with 11 boards in the setback.

 

(18) Oklahoma 90, Northwestern State 68

Norman, OK (SportsNetwork.com) - Isaiah Cousins had 20 points and seven rebounds in the 18th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners' 90-68 rout of the Northwestern State Demons. Buddy Hield added 16 points, seven boards and two steals for the Sooners (2-1), who bounced back from a 65-63 loss at Creighton on Wednesday. Ryan Spangler, Jordan Woodard and Dinjiyl Walker each scored 13 points. Zeek Woodley ended with 26 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Demons (2-2), who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Marvin Frazier had 11 points and seven boards.

 

(20) Ohio State 106, Sacred Heart 48

Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - D'Angelo Russell scored a career-high 32 points to lead No. 20 Ohio State to a 106-48 rout of Sacred Heart on Sunday. Russell shot 12-for-21, including 4-for-8 from 3-point range, Shannon Scott had 11 points and a school-record 16 assists and Sam Thompson and Jae'Sean Tate each chipped in 12 points for the Buckeyes (3-0), who were coming off a 74-63 win over Marquette. Filip Nowicki finished with 10 points and nine rebounds for the Pioneers (1-2), who lost their second straight game.


Illinois State 64, Old Dominion 45

St. Thomas, VI (SportsNetwork.com) - DeVaughn Akoon-Purcell and Bobby Hunter both scored 12 points as the Illinois State Redbirds defeated the Old Dominion Monarchs, 64-45, in the semifinal round of the 2014 Paradise Jam. Also scoring in double figures for the Redbirds (2-1) were Deontae Hawkins and Reggie Lynch with 11 and 10 points, respectively.


Cincinnati 54, Eastern Illinois 49

Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Troy Caupain knocked down 17 points to lead the Cincinnati Bearcats over the Eastern Illinois Panthers, 54-49, as part of the Emerald Coast Classic at Fifth Third Arena. Caupain shot 8-of-13 from the field for the Bearcats (3-0), who opened their season with three straight wins. Octavius Ellis grabbed 13 rebounds and had four blocked shots.
