Effingham split victories with Robinson in junior high school boys basketball competition Tuesday evening.

The Effingham seventh-graders played their best game of the season but lost a heartbreaker to Robinson. With the Mustangs leading by one point with 10 seconds remaining, Robinson took the ball out of bounds. Robinson inbounded the ball and Seth Steats hit a three-point field goal from the left wing with just three seconds remaining to give Robinson a 38-36 victory.

Effingham placed eight different players iin the scorebook and were led by Austin Waldhoff and Kyle Nohren with eight each. The seventh-grade Mustangs fall to 1-3 on the season and return to action Thursday hosting Charleston.  There have been 12 minute, seventh and eighth grade "B" games added starting at 5:15 p.m.

In eighth-grade competition, Effingham bounced Robinson 56-31 to improve to 4-0 on the season. It was Robinson's first loss in five games.

The Mustangs stepped out to a 15-7 opening quarter lead and led 31-16 at halftime. Effingham then had a 20-4 third period run.

Three players scored in double figures for the Mustangs. Wolfe tallied 21 while Lee added 11 and Jackson 10. Jackson led in steals with four. Wolfe led in rebounds with nine and Lee added eight.

The Effingham Pep Club will be collecting food for Catholic Charities during the evening.

At Mattoon

Effingham Sacred Heart claimed a 32-20 win over Mattoon St. John's. No other information was provided.

 

At Dieterich

Teutopolis captured the championship of the Dieterich Seventh-Grade Boys Basketball Tournament Thursday.

T-town edged Newton St. Thomas 26-22. St. Thomas held a 16-12 first half lead before T-town came back with a 9-2 third period run.

T-town was led by Alex Deters with seven points and Brady McMahon with six. St. Thomas was led by Weber with 12.

Dieterich defeated Olney St. Joe for third place, 26-19.

Dalton Will led Dieterich with nine points. Dieterich is now 1-2 on the season.
