Effingham St. Anthony captured the championship of its own eighth-grade girls basketball tournament Saturday.

In the semifinals, Cumberland defeated Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor 38-30 and St. Anthony won over Effingham Sacred Heart 28-21.

Cumberland led Stew-Stras/Windsor 16-10 at halftime and 23-16 going into the final quarter. Stew-Stras/Windsor came back with a 13-6 final quarter run to knot the score at 29-29, sending the game into overtime. Cumberland then had a 9-1 overtime run to pull out the victory.

Cumberland was led by Dunaway with 12 and Napier with 11. Tabbert led Stew-Stras/Windsor with 19.

St. Anthony edged Sacred Heart. The Bullpups held a 14-11 hafltime lead then had a 10-2 third quarter run. The Shamrocks came back in the final quarter only to fall short.

Kabbes led the winners with 10 points. N. Carie led Sacred Heart with 13.

In the third place contest, Sacred Heart downed Stew-Stras/Windsor 35-17. Sacred Heart held a 16-11 halftime lead then had an 11-2 third quarter spurt. Webster tallied 18 for the winners. Leading Stew-Stras/Windsor was Tabbert with 28.

In the champoinship game, St. Anthony downed Cumberland 32-13. The Bullpups held a 12-8 halftime lead and outscored Cumberland 20-5 in the second half.

Kabbes sccored 12 and McHugh 11 for the winners. Napier led Cumberland with five.

At Monticello

Teutopolis competed in the Monticello Shootout Saturday. In seventh-grade competition, T-town downed St. Joseph 33-27. T-town led 22-17 going into the final quarter and held off St. Joseph.

Olivia Niemerg tallied 19 for the winners.

In the eighth-grade contest, T-town took a 47-18 victory. The Shoes jumped out to a 15-5 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Morgan Mette scored 14 and Emma Deters 11 for T-town.

T-town then bounced Monticello 33-7. T-town held a 14-4 first half lead and outscored Monticello 11-2 in the third quarter. Claire Bushur led the Shoes with eight points. T-town is now 17-0 on the season.

In the eighth-grade contest, Monticello edged T-town 24-22. Monticello took the big first quarter 11-6 lead and then had to hold off T-town.

Savannah Grimes tallied seven for the winners. T-town is now 12-5 on the season.

At Newton

Jasper County handed Marshall two losses in action Saturday.

Jasper County won the seventh-grade encounter 46-14 with a 23-2 second quarter run. Abby Stone tallied 18 points for the winners.

In the eighth-grade game, Jasper County won 37-27. Mallory Bergbower led the team with 23 points.
