MOUNT VERNON -- Effingham Junior High School's seventh-grade boys basketball team opened its season on the road at Mount Vernon and pulled out a 53-47 overtime victory.

Parker Siner, Parker Snow and Austin Waldhoff led the Mustangs in scoring with 12 each. The Mustangs fell behind early but battled back to tie the game and force overtime. In the overtime period, Waldhoff and Snow were a perfect 4-of-4 each from the free throw line helping the Mustangs outscore Mount Vernon 12-6.

Sam Thompson led the team in rebounds with six. The Mustangs return to action next Tuesday traveling to Mount Zion.

The Effingham eighth-grade squad took charge early with a 22-6 opening quarter lead and held a 44-16 halftime lead. The Mustangs then went on for a 66-42 win over Mount Vernon.

Landon Wolfe led the Mustangs with 24 points, seven steals and six rebounds. Cooper Jackson sccored 10 points. Dylan Bushue had six steals and six rebounds. Zach Lee led in rebounds with 16.

At Dieterich

The Dieterich Eighth-Grade Tournament got underway Monday evening.

Dieterich fell to Hutsonville, 39-28. Hutsonville took a 27-15 halftime lead. Dieterich came back with a 13-12 second half run but fell short.

Randy Brummer and Seth Bohnhoff led Dieterich with six points each.

At Altamont

In the seventh-grade contest, Altamont captured a 48-30 victory over Neoga Monday evening.

The two teams were tied at 9-9 after one quarter. Altamont then had an 18-7 second period run for a 27-16 halftime lead. Altamont then outscored Neoga 21-14 in the second half.

Kollmann tallied 17 and Delaney 15 for the one-two-scoring punch for Altamont.

In eighth-grade action, Altamont claimed a 39-20 victory. Biggs tallied 16, eight points coming in the third quarter 12-2 run after Altamont led 17-14 at halftime.

Neoga was led by McTeer with seven and Peters with six.

Teutopolis B took on Mattoon St. John's in the Altamont Lutheran Classic Tournament Monday evening and fell 31-15.

Mattoon St. John's held a 12-9 halftime lead then had an 11-0 final period run. T-town B was led by Kendall Zerrusen with eight points.

Jasper County picked up an eighth-grade victory over Oblong Monday evening. Jasper County won 44-19.

Zak Finn tallied 16 points and had seven steals while Conner Bierman had 15 points.
