The National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament got underway Wednesday evening at Beecher City.

In the opener, top-seeded Altamont claimed a 39-13 victory over eighth-seeded Neoga. Altamont held an 18-5 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Leah Mayhaus scored 11 and Joanna Schultz 10 in the win. Neoga was led by Allison Kingery with seven.

In the second game, Brownstown/St. Elmo, seeded fifth, upset fourth-seeded Effingham Sacred Heart 38-37. The Shamrocks took a 16-5 opening quarter lead and led 26-11 at halftime. BSE came back with a 15-9 run to pull within 35-26 going into the final period then outscored the Shamrocks 12-2 to pull out the one-point win.

Claire Wlhour scored 20 points for the winners while Natalie Oberlink chipped in with 13. Sacred Heart was led by Abby Stock and Natalie Carie with 10 each.

The tournament continues tonight as Stewardson-Strasburg/Windsor faces Dieterich at 5:30 followed by Sigel St. Michael taking on Beecher City/Cowden-Herrick at 6:45 to end the opening round games. Neoga and Sacred Heart square off at 8 p.m. in the consolation bracket.

At Robinson

Jasper County played for the conference championship and fell to Paris Mayo 30-17 Wednesday evening.

Paris Mayo held a 16-6 halftime lead and the game was never in doubt as the winners had a 10-5 run in the third period.

Josie Grunloh led Jasper County with six points.
