Cavaliers Take Wiggins First In NBA Draft

(Brooklyn, NY) -- Andrew Wiggins is the number-one pick in this year's NBA Draft. The Cleveland Cavaliers selected the forward out of Kansas with the first selection. It's the second straight year and third in the last four the Cavs have had the top pick. Duke guard Jabari Parker went second overall to the Milwaukee Bucks, while the Philadelphia 76ers selected Kansas center Joel Embiid at number-three. Embiid had been projected to go first overall until recent surgery for a stress fracture in his foot.

The Orlando Magic selected Arizona forward Aaron Gordon fourth, while the Utah Jazz took Australian guard Dante Exum with the fifth pick. The Magic also had the 12th pick and chose Croatian forward Dario Saric but traded him to Philadelphia for point guard Elfrid Payton, who was selected 10th out of Louisiana-Lafayette. The Magic also sent the Sixers a 2015 second-round pick and a future first-round pick in the deal. The Denver Nuggets chose Creighton forward Doug McDermott with the 11th pick but traded him to Chicago for picks 16 and 19. Denver ended up with Jusuf Nurkic out of Croatia and Michigan State guard Gary Harris. The Phoenix Suns held three picks in the first round and grabbed NC State forward T.J. Warren, Syracuse guard Tyler Ennis and Serbian forward Bogdan Bogdanovic.

The NBA showed its class by drafting former Baylor big man Isaiah Austin. The pick was made prior to Chicago selecting at number 16. Austin's basketball career was cut short this past week after being diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, an illness that creates problems in connective tissues throughout the body.

Bulls Deal For McDermott In Draft

(Brooklyn, NY) -- The Bulls used two first-round picks in last night's draft to trade with the Nuggets for 11th overall pick Doug McDermott of Creighton.  The sharp-shooter led the NCAA in scoring last season. Chicago picked Croatian center Jusuf Nurkic and Michigan State guard Gary Harris to trade.

In addition to landing Doug McDermott in last night's draft, the Bulls had a second round selection. Chicago picked New Mexico center Cameron Bairstow at 49th overall. The 6-foot-10 big man was named first-team All-Mountain West and helped the Lobos to the NCAA Tournament.
