The Teutopolis Lady Shoes won the third place game at the Girls Class 2A State Tournament Saturday night, defeating Elmhurst I-C Catholic, 32-28.  The contest at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.

The Shoes had a tough time getting their offense started, but their defense kept I-C Catholic close enough so they could strike when the shots started to fall.  Teutopolis could only muster two Haley Giles foul shots in the first quarter, but the Lady Shoes were only down 6-2 at the end of the period. A 10-10 standoff in the second quarter left the Lady Knights with a 16-12 halftime advantage, but the Shoes had finally seen some shots go in the basket.

Teutopolis came out after halftime determined to turn the defense up another notch, and accomplished just that, holding I-C Catholic to two points in the third quarter while the Lady Shoes put eight points on the board and finally took their first lead of the game at the end of the third quarter, 20-18.

I-C Catholic mounted a comeback, but Teutopolis fought off every challenge, outscoring the Lady Knights 12-10 in the final period to win by four points.

Teutopolis made 39% of its shots, hitting 13 of 33 including one of four three-pointers.  The Lady Shoes made five of seven foul shots, turned the ball over 12 times and pulled down 26 rebounds.

I-C Catholic made just under 30% of its shots, hitting 14 of 47 and missed all three of its three-point tries.  The Lady Knights also took just three foul shots, and missed them all.  The Lady Knights committed just eight turnovers and grabbed 26 rebounds.

Cierra Thompson led Teutopolis with nine points, while Madeline Hartke added seven points along with nine rebounds.  Also for the Lady Shoes: Chelsey Hardiek six, Anna Hartke four, and Jessica Schumacher, Danielle Repking and Haley Giles two points apiece.

The Lady Shoes closed out their season with a 29-6 record.  Teutopolis will say goodbye to seniors Jessica Schumacher, Haley Giles, Cierra Thompson and Madeline Hartke.

Sunday's Welcome Home parade and reception was postponed to a later date due to the winter storm.

Champaign St. Thomas More won the 2A state championship, easily dispatching Prophetstown, 70-34.

The 1A state championship Saturday afternoon went to Annawan, who defeated Carrollton, 59-23. Lanark Eastland won the third place game, defeating Central A&M, 55-50.
