Cubs Shut Out Reds

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Travis Wood tossed seven innings of shutout ball to lead the Cubs in a 2-0 win over the Reds. Wood struck out seven and scattered six hits to improve to 9-11. Luis Valbuena went 2-for-4 with a solo homer while Ryan Sweeney also went deep. Kevin Gregg closed it out for his 31st save for Chicago, which had lost four out of six. Bronson Arroyo fell to 13-11 after allowing the two runs over seven innings. Joey Votto and Zack Cozart were each 2-for-4 but Cincinnati saw a four-game winning streak end.

 

White Sox Tame Tigers

(Chicago, IL) -- Chris Sale struck out eight over eight innings of one-run ball to lead the White Sox in a 5-1 win over the Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field. Sale improved to 11-12 with the win as Chicago won its second straight following a nine-game slide. Paul Konerko hit a two-run single while Dayan Viciedo and Josh Phegley also knocked in runs. Max Scherzer failed in his bid for a 20th win after allowing five runs in four innings. He fell to 19-3. Victor Martinez hit a solo homer for Detroit while Miguel Cabrera and manager Jim Leyland were each ejected in the first inning for arguing a check swing call. The Tigers have lost three straight and five out of six.

 

Braves Latch Marlins

(Miami, FL) -- The Braves used a five-run fourth inning, keyed by an Evan Gattis two-run double, as they dumped the Marlins, 5-2, in the first of four games at Marlins Park.  Chris Johnson and Elliot Johnson each added RBI singles. Kris Medlen grabbed his 13th win of the season, dealing six-and-one-third innings of two-run ball. Craig Kimbrel earned his 45th save with a perfect ninth. Atlanta is 86-57. Ed Lucas drove in both runs for the Marlins, which dropped to 53-89. Henderson Alvarez took the loss for Miami.

 

Gonzalez, Nats Blank Mets

(Flushing, NY) -- Gio Gonzalez tossed a complete game shutout, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning, as the Nationals blanked the Mets 9-0 in the first of four games at Citi Field.  Zach Lutz singled on the first pitch of the seventh to break up the no-hit bid.  Gonzalez struck out eight while giving up just the one hit and two walks as he improved his mark to 10-6. Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos both hit three-run homers, while Denard Span and Tyler Moore added solo shots for the Nats, who have won three in-a-row. Carlos Torres was tagged for six runs in four frames as he fell to 3-4. The Mets have dropped six-of-eight.

 

Uribe, Dodgers Smoke D'Backs

(Los Angeles, CA) -- Juan Uribe hit a home run in each of his first three at bats to lead the Dodgers to an 8-1 whooping of the Diamondbacks in the first of three at Dodger Stadium.  Uribe finished 4-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Adrian Gonzalez, Andre Ethier and Hanley Ramirez also left the yard.  Ricky Nolasco improved to 13-9, allowing three hits and one unearned run in 6 2/3 innings. LA ended a four-game losing streak to move to 84-59. Didi Gregorius drove in the only run for Arizona. Randall Delgado didn't make through the third inning, giving up five runs and seven hits. The D'backs fell to 72-71.

 

Giants Edge Rockies In 10

(San Francisco, CA) -- Brandon Belt singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift the Giants past the Rockies 3-2 in the opener of a three-game set at AT&T Park.  Belt also doubled in a run in the eighth to tie the game, while Buster Posey hit a solo homer for the Giants, who have won three of their last four. Santiago Casilla picked up the win. Yorvit Torrealba and Troy Tulowitzki plated a run each for Colorado, which has dropped four in-a-row and six of its last seven. Adam Ottavino suffered the loss.

 

Indians Dump Royals

(Cleveland, OH) -- Three solo homers carried the Indians offense as they beat the Royals 4-3 to open up a three-game set at Progressive Field. Asdrubal Cabrera, Yan Gomes and Carlos Santana all left the yard. Ubaldo Jimenez improved to 11-9, allowing no earned runs with 10 strikeouts in seven innings. Chris Perez locked up his 23rd save. Cleveland is 77-66. Alex Gordon was 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in the loss. Ervin Santana allowed all four runs to fall to 8-9. The Royals are 75-69.

 

Orioles Double Up Yankees

(Baltimore, MD) -- Chris Tillman tossed seven innings of two-run ball to lead the Orioles to a 4-2 win over the Yankees at Camden Yards.  Tillman struck out nine and improved to 16-and-5 with the win. Nick Markakis went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run while Adam Jones, J.J. Hardy and Alexi Casilla each knocked in a run for the Birds. Jim Johnson closed it out for his 43rd save.  Baltimore has won four out of five and now trails the Rays by 1 1/2 games for the AL's second Wild Card spot. Alex Rodriguez and Lyle Overbay each hit solo homers for New York. CC Sabathia fell to 13-12 after allowing three earned runs in 7 1/3 innings. The Yanks have lost four out of five and are three games out of a playoff spot.

Twins Double Up Angels

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Trevor Plouffe drove in three including the go-ahead run in the seventh inning as the Twins doubled up the Angels 6-3 at Target Field. The teams were playing a makeup game from an April 17 rainout. Josmil Pinto went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Twins, who snapped a franchise-record tying 10-game home losing streak set back in 1957 while the team was in Washington.  Casey Fien picked up the win in relief and Glen Perkins earned his 33rd save. Kole Calhoun had three hits and an RBI, while Josh Hamilton added two hits and drove in a run for the Halos, who have lost two in-a-row after a three-game winning streak. Cory Rasmus suffered his first career loss.

 

Astros Rally Past Mariners

(Seattle, WA) -- The Astros rallied for four runs in the top of the ninth to score a 6-4 win over the Mariners at Safeco Field. Jonathan Villar popped a two-run single as Houston ended a three-game slide. Jose Altuve went 3-for-5 while Trevor Crowe was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Kevin Chapman notched the win in relief while Josh Fields recorded his fourth save. Danny Farquhar blew his fourth save and took the loss for Seattle. Abraham Almonte hit a two-run homer and Brad Miller cracked a solo shot in the ninth but the Mariners have lost six out of nine.

 

Pirates Edge Rangers In Pitcher's Duel

(Arlington, TX) -- Pedro Alvarez lifted an RBI double in the seventh for the game's only run as the Pirates edged the Rangers 1-0 in Arlington. The victory secured a winning season for Pittsburgh for the first time since 1992. Gerrit Cole scattered three hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out nine to improve to 7-7 for Pittsburgh. Mark Melancon closed it out for his 12th save as the Bucs ended a four-game losing streak. The Pirates now trail the St. Louis Cardinals by one game in the NL Central. Yu Darvish tossed seven innings of one-run ball with six strikeouts, but departed with cramping in his right leg. He fell to 12-8 in the defeat. Texas has lost six out of eight and trails the Oakland Athletics by two games in the AL West.

 

Orioles' Showalter, Yankees' Girardi Exchange Words In Baltimore

(Baltimore, MD) -- Orioles skipper Buck Showalter and Yankees manager Joe Girardi exchanged words after the first inning of Monday night's game and had to be restrained by umpires behind home plate. Showalter claims that Girardi was talking to his third base coach Bobby Dickerson and accusing them of stealing signs. Both benches were warned by umpires.

 

Pirates Claim 82nd Win, Clinch First Winning Season Since '92

(Arlington, TX) -- The Pittsburgh Pirates defeated the Texas Rangers 1-0 on Monday night for their 82nd win of the season. It clinches the first winning campaign for Pittsburgh since 1992, which is also the last time the Pirates made the playoffs. The win also ended a four-game losing streak for the Bucs, who trail the St. Louis Cardinals by one game in the NL Central.
