Cubs Roll Past Phillies

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Donnie Murphy lifted a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to help the Cubs drop the Phillies 5-2 in Philadelphia. He finished 3-for-3 with two homers for Chicago, which snapped a five-game slide. Junior Lake went 2-for-4 with an RBI in the win. Pedro Strop picked up the win and Kevin Gregg added his 23rd save. Luis Garcia suffered the loss in relief. Domonic Brown belted a solo home run for Philadelphia, which has lost six-of-seven.

 

Dodgers Smash Cardinals

(St. Louis, MO) -- Andre Ethier and Skip Schumaker drove in four runs each and had three hits apiece, leading the Dodgers to a 13-4 romp over the Cardinals at Busch Stadium. Los Angeles has taken two of the first three games in the series. Carl Crawford also had four hits, and his double off the elbow of Cardinals starter Shelby Miller knocked Miller out of the game in the top of the first inning. Ricky Nolasco did not allow an earned run over five innings to qualify for the win. X-rays on Miller were negative, but Jake Westbrook allowed nine runs on 13 hits in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss. The Dodgers have won six of their last seven games while the Birds have lost three of five.

 

White Sox Sneak By Yankees

(Chicago, IL) -- Alejandro De Aza tripled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the White Sox a 6-5 win over the Yankees in Chicago. Adam Dunn capped a four-run rally with an RBI single in the ninth for Chicago, which was down 4-0 after the fourth frame. Gordon Beckham also went deep for the Sox, who swept the three-game series. Dylan Axelrod picked up the win. Robinson Cano put the Yankees up 5-4 in the top of the 12th with a solo shot. Alfonso Soriano hit a two-run jack and Eduardo Nunez added a solo home run for New York, which has lost four straight. Adam Warren suffered the loss. Alex Rodriguez was 1-for-5.

 

Rangers Outgun Angels

(Anaheim, CA) -- Adrian Beltre blasted a two-run homer to power the Rangers to a 10-3 win over the Angels in Anaheim.  He ended 3-for-4 with four runs for Texas, which has won nine-of-10 overall to move into a tie with Oakland atop the AL West. Mitch Moreland and David Murphy each knocked in two runs for the Rangers. Alexi Ogando allowed two runs in five frames for the win. Birthday boy Mike Trout hit a two-run shot for Los Angeles, which has lost four in-a-row.  He also went deep on his 21st birthday last season. Kole Calhoun also knocked in a run for the Halos. Tommy Hanson allowed five runs in under five innings for the loss.

 

Reds Take Early Lead And Hang On Against A's

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Jay Bruce blasted his 24th home run and drove in three runs as the Reds held on for a 6-5 victory over the visiting Athletics from the Great American Ball Park. Homer Bailey improved to 7-10 despite being knocked around for five runs on nine hits over five innings. Corky Miller hit a pair of RBI doubles before leaving with a right quad contusion for the Reds, who swept this brief two-game set.  Bartolo Colon suffered just his fourth loss. Colon had a rough outing, giving up five runs on seven hits in just under three-innings of work.  Josh Donaldson hit a solo homer and knocked in two runs for the A's, who have lost three in a row.

 

O's, Davis Slug Their Way To Victory Over Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- Chris Davis launched a three-run go ahead home run in the eighth inning as the Orioles piled on for a 10-3 win over the Padres at Petco Park. J.J. Hardy also homered and Adam Jones added three hits in the win. Miguel Gonzalez had the lone blemish of a Jed Gyorko three-run home run in six innings of work. Francisco Rodriguez picked up his first win in a Baltimore uniform in relief. Luke Gregerson took his sixth loss of the season out of the bullpen. The O's swept the short, two-game series.

 

Diamondbacks Win Wild One Over Rays

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Martin Prado went 4-for-4 and drove in four runs to lead the Diamondbacks to a 9-8 win over the Rays and a sweep of the two-game series. Arizona turned a franchise-record six double plays, including one to end the game and get a save for Brad Ziegler. The D-backs are 9-1 in their last 10 interleague games at home.  Aaron Hill knocked in two runs in the win. J.J. Putz pitched an inning of relief to improve to 3-1.  Matt Joyce went 3-for-3 and Evan Longoria, Sam Fuld and Yunel Escobar drove in two runs each for the Rays.  Tampa Bay starting pitcher Chris Archer left the game in the second inning with right forearm tightness and outfielder Wil Myers left later due to an asthma issue. Joel Peralta took the loss and dropped to 1-5.

 

Brewers Blow By Giants

(San Francisco, CA) -- The Brewers exploded for six runs in the eighth and ninth innings to blow out the Giants 6-1 at AT&T Park. Khris Davis hit a solo home run and Jeff Bianchi had two hits and scored twice for the Brewers, who have won two of the first three in this four-game set. Alfredo Figaro allowed a run on a hit over two innings of relief but got the win and improved to 2-and-3. The Brewers got to Giants starter Madison Bumgarner for four runs on five hits over seven-plus innings. Bumgarner fell to 11-7. The Giants have lost four of their last five games and are in last place in the NL West at 50-63.

 

Tigers Top Tribe In 14

(Cleveland, OH) -- Prince Fielder doubled in two runs to help the Tigers top the Indians 6-5 in 14 innings.  Miguel Cabrera lifted a two-run home run in the eighth to put the Tigers up one run, but Yan Gomes knocked in the tying run in the bottom of that inning to tie it for the Tribe. Austin Jackson belted a solo shot for Detroit, which has won 11 straight and seven-of-eight on the road. Jeremy Bonderman picked up the win and Joaquin Benoit notched his 14th save. Gomes also had a solo home run for Cleveland, which is now six games back of Detroit in the AL Central.  Bryan Shaw suffered the loss in relief.

 

Red Sox Rally Against Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Stephen Drew belted a three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to give the Red Sox a 7-5 win over the Astros in Houston. Jonny Gomes hit a two-run shot in the seventh to bring the BoSox within a run. David Ortiz was 4-for-5 for Boston, which has won four-of-five. Junichi Tazawa picked up the win and Koji Uehara locked up his 11th save. Robbie Grossman belted a two-run shot for Houston, which has lost six-of-seven. Jason Castro was 2-for-4 with a run scored and driven in for the Astros. Josh Fields took the loss in relief.

 

Royals Bounce Twins

(Kansas City, MO) -- Alex Gordon was 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to help the Royals pull out a 5-2 win over the Twins to take two of three in Kansas City. Alcides Escobar added two hits and two RBI. Greg Holland locked up his 30th save, while reliever Louis Coleman picked up his second win.  Kansas City has won four of five to move to 58-53. Brian Dozier collected three hits, an RBI and a run scored. He finished a homer short of the cycle. Samuel Deduno allowed 12 hits and four runs to take the loss. Minnesota is 49-62.

 

Braves Rip Nats

(Washington, DC) -- Justin Upton went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Braves to a 6-3 win over the Nationals in D.C. The red-hot Upton extended his hit streak to 12-games as Atlanta won its 13 straight.  B.J. Upton collected four hits, while Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman each drove in run for the Braves, who swept the three-game series. Kris Medlen improved to 9-10. Washington's Jayson Werth hit his 16th long ball of the season, had two RBI and scored twice. Reliever Ryan Mattheus was handed his first loss of the season.

 

Pirates Edge Marlins

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Charlie Morton limited the Marlins to two runs on six hits over seven innings as the Pirates handled Miami 4-2 at PNC Park. Andrew McCutchen hit a solo home run and Morton helped his own cause with an RBI single. Mark Melancon earned his seventh save. Morton is now 4-3 and the Pirates have won four straight. Rookie Christian Yelich had two hits for the Marlins, who have lost four straight. Tom Koehler took the loss to drop to 3-7.

 

Harvey Throws Shutout As Mets Beat Rockies

(Flushing, NY) -- Matt Harvey threw the first complete game shutout of his career as the Mets blanked the Rockies 5-0 from Citi Field. Harvey only surrendered 4 hits and struck out six for his ninth win. Wilmer Flores collected two hits and drove in three runs for the Mets in his second career game. New York has won the first two-games of the three-game set. Jhoulys Chacin fell to 10-6 while throwing seven innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and struck out five. The Rockies have lost eight of nine games.

 

Mariners Bounce Blue Jays

(Seattle WA) -- The Blue Jays were on track to put together a four-game winning streak and close out a West Coast swing within striking distance of a .500 record. But then the Mariners scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a lead Toronto could not overcome on Wednesday afternoon, as the Blue Jays ended a 10-game road trip with a 9-7 loss in front of 34,792 at Safeco Field.

 

Yankees' A-Rod Formally Files Appeal

(New York, NY) -- Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez has reportedly formally filed an appeal of his 211-game suspension by Major League Baseball for his role in the Biogenesis scandal.  The "New York Post" reports the process is expected to stretch into the offseason, allowing A-Rod to play for the Yankees until the process plays out. Rodriguez returned to the Yankees lineup Monday after missing the first 110 games due to injury.

 

Phillies Extend Chase Utley

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Chase Utley is staying put in a Phillies uniform. Philadelphia and the second baseman agreed on a two-year contract extension. Fox Sports is reporting the deal will be between $25 and $30-million. Utley was in the final year of a seven-year, $85-million contract. The 34-year-old is hitting .275 with 15 homers and 42 RBI for the Phils this season.
