Cardinals, White Sox Win, Cubs Lose Again; ML Roundup

Cards Snap Dodgers' Road Win Streak

(St. Louis, MO) -- Matt Adams hit a two-run homer to power the Cardinals to a 5-1 win over the Dodgers at Busch Stadium, snapping Los Angeles' franchise-record 15-game road winning streak.  Cardinals right fielder Carlos Beltran says getting a victory against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers is a big boost.

Beltran also hit a homer for St. Louis, which has won four out of six. Joe Kelly gave up one run over 5 1/3 innings to move to 3-3. Kershaw pitched six innings of two-run ball for the Dodgers, but fell to 10-7. Carl Crawford was 2-for-3 and scored on Adrian Gonzalez's RBI single in the sixth. The Dodgers had won five straight overall coming in.

 

Phillies Hold Off Cubs

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Carlos Ruiz and Darin Ruf each hit a solo homer as the Phillies held on for a 9-8 win over the Cubs at Citizens Bank Park. Ruff drove in two while Chase Utley was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Domonic Brown also knocked in a pair for Philadelphia, which stopped a five-game skid. Kyle Kendrick improved to 10-and-8 despite allowing five runs in six innings.  Donnie Murphy hit a three-run homer and Anthony Rizzo added a solo shot for Chicago, which has lost five straight games. Edwin Jackson gave up seven runs in just five frames as he fell to 7-and-12.

 

White Sox Clip Yanks

(Chicago, IL) -- Chris Sale outdueled Hiroki Kuroda as the White Sox edged the Yankees 3-2 at U.S. Cellular Field.  Sale went seven-and-a-third innings and struck out six while allowing one run and improving to 7-11. Alejandro De Aza went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Paul Konerko and Conor Gillaspie each knocked in a run. Addison Reed notched his 27th save for Chicago, which has won back-to-back games since a 10-game slide. Kuroda gave up three runs in seven innings as he fell to 10-7. Brett Gardner drove in a run while Alex Rodriguez went 1-for-2 with a walk in his second game of the year. New York has lost three straight and four out of five.

 

Rangers Bash Angels

(Anaheim, CA) -- Yu Darvish gave up three runs across seven frames as the Rangers earned an 8-3 win over the Angels in Anaheim. Darvish struck out six on his way to an 11-and-5 record.  Tanner Scheppers pitched the final two frames for his first save. Elvis Andrus went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs while Adrian Beltre had two hits and two RBI. Texas has won eight out of nine. Kole Calhoun and Mike Trout each hit solo homers for Los Angeles in defeat.  Garrett Richards gave up three runs in six innings to start the game, but Kevin Jepsen suffered the loss in defeat. The Angels have lost three in-a-row.

 

Latos Pitches Reds Past A's

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Mat Latos improved to 11-3 by pitching the Reds to a 3-1 win over the Athletics at Great American Ballpark. Latos went 7 1/3 innings and allowed just four hits with three walks as Cincinnati won its third in five games. Jay Bruce hit a solo homer and Brandon Phillips knocked in a run in the win. Aroldis Chapman allowed a solo homer to Derek Norris but closed it out for his 26th save.  Dan Straily lasted four innings and allowed two runs for Oakland.  He fell to 6-6 as the A's dropped their fifth in six games.

 

D'backs Handle Rays

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Cody Ross' three-run homer sparked Arizona's offense as the Diamondbacks grabbed a 6-1 win over the Rays at Chase Field. Eric Chavez finished 2-for-4 with two RBI while Martin Prado also knocked in a run. Wade Miley pitched seven innings of one-run ball to improve to 9-8 for the D'backs, who had lost six out of eight. Evan Longoria's solo homer in the fourth accounted for Tampa Bay's lone run. Jeremy Hellickson gave up five runs in less than five innings as he fell to 10-5. The Rays had won four out of six entering the game.

 

Jones Powers O's Past Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- Adam Jones went 4-for-4 with a homer and two RBI to lead the Orioles in a 4-1 win over the Padres at Petco Park. Chris Davis knocked in a run and went 2-for-4 as Baltimore stopped a two-game skid. Bud Norris pitched six innings of one-run ball to improve to 2-0 since joining the Birds while Jim Johnson notched his 39th save. Edison Volquez fell to 8-9 after allowing two runs in six frames with six strikeouts for San Diego. Yonder Alonso was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Pads, who have dropped three out of five.

 

Harrison, Pirates Walk Off Marlins

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Josh Harrison lifted a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 win over the Marlins at PNC Park. Pittsburgh trailed 3-0 before tying the game in the third. Andrew McCutchen was 2-for-3 with two RBI and Pedro Alvarez drove in the other Pittsburgh run. Reliever Bryan Morris picked up the win as the Pirates took the opener of the three-game set. They improved to 68-44. Logan Morrison and Donovan Solano each had RBI singles in the loss. Miami missed multiple chances to build a lead going 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position. Reliever Mike Dunn fell to 2-3 for the Marlins, who are 43-68.

 

Lagares, Mets Sink Rockies

(Flushing, NY) -- Juan Lagares drove in all three Mets' runs as they defeated the Rockies 3-2 in the first of three at Citi Field. Lagares plated the winning run on an infield single in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jenrry Mejia continued to pitch well allowing one earned run and striking out seven in five-and-a-third innings. Reliever Scott Atchison grabbed the win and LaTroy Hawkins nailed down his first save of the season. New York improved to 50-60. Charlie Blackmon hit his second homer in the loss. It was as a pinch hitter and tied the game at two in the sixth. Reliever Wilton Lopez dropped to 1-4. The Rockies are 52-62.

 

Brewers Clip Giants

(San Francisco, CA) -- Wily Peralta pitched strongly into the seventh inning to help the Brewers sneak past the Giants, 3-1, in the second of four games at AT&T Park. Peralta struck out six and allowed one-run to improve to 8-11. Carlos Gomez smacked a solo homer and Jonathan Lucroy had a RBI sac fly. Jim Henderson snagged his 16th save. The two teams have split the first two of the series. San Francisco left eight men on base and was 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Pinch hitter Joaquin Arias drove in the only run a ground out in the seventh inning.  Matt Cain was handed the tough-luck loss giving up two runs in seven innings.

 

Tigers Dump Indians

(Cleveland, OH) -- The Tigers used a five-run fifth inning as they put more distance between themselves and the Indians with a 5-1 win in the second of four games at Progressive Field.  Don Kelly's three-run homer was the back-breaker to help Detroit move five games ahead of Cleveland in the AL Central. Justin Verlander struck out seven and allowed one run over eight innings to earn his 12th win. Ryan Raburn knocked in the only run for the Tribe. Justin Masterson took the loss allowing all of Detroit's runs.

 

Red Sox Outslug Astros

(Houston, TX) -- Jacoby Ellsbury hit two homers and drove in three as the Red Sox outslugged the Astros 15-10 in Houston. Jonny Gomes hit a three-run shot and knocked in four runs for Boston, which has won three out of four. David Ortiz was 4-for-4 with two RBI while Shane Victorino had three hits and scored four times. Brandon Workman picked up the win in relief despite allowing six runs in less than five innings. Jordan Lyles surrendered eight runs in less than five frames for Houston to fall to 4-6. Robbie Grossman hit a two-run homer and drove in three while Brett Wallace and Jake Elmore also went deep for the Astros  Houston has lost five out of six.

 

Twins Blank Royals Behind Albers

(Kansas City, KS) -- Andrew Albers took a four-hitter into the ninth inning in his major-league debut and led the Twins to a 7-0 win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Albers pitched eight-and-a-third innings while walking one and striking out two for the win. Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer plus Brian Dozier and Chris Colabello added solo shots for Minnesota.  Dozier finished with three RBI as the Twins won their fourth in five games. James Shields was rocked for all seven runs in six frames as he fell to 6-8. Eric Hosmer and Billy Butler were each 2-for-3 but Kansas City had its three-game winning streak snapped.

 

Braves Swat Nats For 12th Straight Win

(Washington, DC) -- Evan Gattis' two-run single in the fifth gave Julio Teheran enough offense to work with as the Braves defeated the Nationals 2-1 in DC. It's the 12th straight win for Atlanta, which increased its lead in the NL East to 14 1/2 games over Washington. Teheran pitched six innings of one-run ball to move to 9-5 while Craig Kimbrel notched his 35th save. Benches and bullpens cleared in the fifth inning when Teheran plunked Bryce Harper with a pitch. Harper hit a solo homer in the third for the Nats, who have dropped three in-a-row. Gio Gonzalez gave up two runs in seven frames to fall to 7-5.

 

Johnson Pitches Blue Jays Past Mariners

(Seattle WA) -- Josh Johnson pitched like he wanted to keep his job Tuesday night. Amid a disappointing season, Johnson threw five scoreless innings to help the Blue Jays beat the Mariners, 7-2, in front of 28,198 at Safeco Field. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said recently that Johnson, who carried a 1-8 record with a 6.60 ERA into Tuesday's matchup, would be evaluated start by start. The right-hander responded against the Mariners by working himself out of trouble through most of his five innings.
