(St. Louis, MO) -- Yadier Molina hit a two-run home run and Jake Westbrook held the Cubs to two hits over seven innings as the Cardinals won 4-1 at Busch Stadium. Westbrook did not allow an earned run to improve to 3-2. Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday had two hits each and Edward Mujica picked up his 21st save of the season. St. Louis is 4-4 in its last eight games. Edwin Jackson took the loss, falling to 3-9. Anthony Rizzo scored Chicago's only run and had one of the Cubs' two hits. Chicago has dropped three-of-four.  

 

Twins Dump White Sox

(Minneapolis, MN)-- Brian Dozier hit a three-run homer in the second inning and the Twins never gave up the lead as they beat the White Sox, 7-4, at Target Field. Justin Morneau hit a two-run shot in the sixth, while Kevin Correia improved to 6-4. Correia pitched six-and-two-thirds innings of two-run ball and struck out six. Glen Perkins locked up his 18th save helping Minnesota take the first two of the three-game set.  Chris Sale took the loss allowing four runs in five innings. Alejandro De Aza hit a solo homer and Adam Dunn had a two-run single for Chicago.

 

Yankees Hold Off Dodgers

(Bronx, NY) -- Ichiro Suzuki went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI to lead the Yankees to a 6-4 win over the Dodgers in the first game of a doubleheader at Yankee Stadium. Lyle Overbay added a two-run double for New York, which spoiled the return of former Yankee star and current Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. Hiroki Kuroda took a shutout into the seventh, allowing two runs over 6 2/3 frames against his former team to improve to 7-5. Mariano Rivera posted his 25th save. Hyun-Jin Ryu took the loss for L.A.  Hanley Ramirez went 4-for-4 with a two-run homer for the Dodgers in defeat.

Chris Capuano and two relievers combined on a three-hit shutout as the Dodgers blanked the Yankees 6-0 to earn a split in their doubleheader in the Bronx. Capuano, who was activated from the 15-day disabled list before the game, gave up just the three hits while striking out four as he improved to 2-4 with the victory. Yasiel Puig homered and scored three times, while Hanley Ramirez drove in two runs and scored once for LA, which snapped a two-game skid. Phil Hughes allowed five runs and 10 hits over six frames as he fell to 3-6.

 

Davis Homers Twice As Birds Bomb Tigers

(Detroit, MI) -- Chris Davis went 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI as the Orioles trounced the Tigers 13-3 at Comerica Park. Davis leads the majors with 26 home runs. Taylor Teagarden added a three-run blast for Baltimore, which took the final two games of the three-game series. Chris Tillman tossed five-plus innings of three-run ball to improve to 8-2 with the win. Rick Porcello was rocked for six runs in six innings to fall to 4-4 with the loss. Matt Tuiasosopo doubled in two runs to highlight the Detroit attack.

 

Indians Double Up Royals

(Cleveland, OH) -- Michael Brantley connected for two home runs and three RBI as the Indians doubled up the Royals 6-3 to take the rubber match of the three-game set at Progressive Field. Cleveland is 36-25 and in second place in the AL Central, 3 1/2 games behind the Tigers. Justin Masterson improved to 9-5,striking out eight and allowing two runs over 6 1/3 innings. Eric Hosmer and David Lough each had three hits and a run knocked in for the Royals, who fell to 34-36. Luis Mendoza took the loss after giving up four runs in five innings.

 

Rays Cruise Past Red Sox

(Boston, MA) -- Desmond Jennings homered and scored twice as the Rays cruised past the Red Sox 6-2 to avoid a three-game sweep at Fenway Park. Wil Myers hit a two-run double and Evan Longoria went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored for Tampa, which won for just the second time in eight games. Jeremy Hellickson tossed six innings of two-run ball as he upped his mark to 5-3. Jonny Gomes plated both runs on a pair of infield singles for the Sox, who had won three-of-four coming in. Ryan Dempster permitted three runs in six frames as he fell to 4-8 with the loss.

 

Rangers Rout A's

(Arlington, TX) -- Lance Berkman blasted a two-run homer to help power the Rangers past the Athletics 9-4 in Arlington. Ian Kinsler and Nelson Cruz also knocked in two runs apiece for Texas, which has taken two-of-three to start the four-game set. Justin Grimm allowed three runs in five innings for the win.  Chris Young hit a three-run homer for Oakland, which has lost four-of-six. Tommy Milone gave up six runs in 5 1/3 innings for the loss.

 

D'backs Take Rubber Match With Marlins

(Phoenix, AZ) -- Cody Ross broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Diamondbacks beat the Marlins 3-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Chase Field. David Hernandez was credited with the win for the second straight game. Heath Bell closed it out for his 13th save. Arizona has won two in-a-row after a four-game skid  Justin Ruggiano hit a solo homer in the ninth for Miami, which has dropped three-of-five. Jose Fernandez allowed two runs on three hits over 7 1/3 frames to fall to 4-4.

 

Nationals Knock Off Phillies In 11

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Ian Desmond smacked a grand slam in the top of the 11th inning as the Nationals defeated the Phillies 6-2 in Philadelphia. Jayson Werth added two run-scoring singles in the seventh and ninth innings for Washington, which snapped a three-game slide.  Drew Storen picked up the win. Michael Young blasted a two-run homer for Philadelphia, which wasn't able to pull off the three-game sweep.  Michael Stutes suffered the loss out of the bullpen.

 

Braves Best Mets

(Atlanta, GA) -- Chris Johnson smacked a three-run homer as the Braves beat the Mets 5-3 at Turner Field. B.J. Upton doubled in a run and also scored for the Braves, who have split the first four of this five-game series. Kris Medlen struck out seven while giving up three runs, just one earned, over seven innings as he improved to 4-7. Craig Kimbrel closed it out for his 20th save. Kirk Nieuwenhuis plated a run for the Mets, who have lost five-of-eight. Shaun Marcum allowed five runs in less than five frames as he remains winless at 0-9.

 

Reds Clip Pirates In 13 Innings

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Brandon Phillips singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the Reds past the Pirates 2-1 in the third installment of a four-game series at Great American Ball Park.  Jay Bruce hit a game-tying solo homer in the ninth for the Reds, who have won three of their last four. Manny Parra was credited with his first win. Starling Marte scored the lone run on an error for the Bucs, who have alternated wins and losses over their last eight games. Vin Mazzaro fell to 3-2 with the loss.

 

Angels Sneak By Mariners

(Anaheim, CA) -- C.J. Wilson tossed seven innings of two-hit ball as the Angels blanked the Mariners 1-0 in Anaheim. Wilson improved to 6-5 with the win. Ernesto Frieri picked up his 16th save for Los Angeles, which has won two-of-three to start the four-game series. Mike Trout scored on a wild pitch for the game's lone run. Joe Saunders threw an eight-inning complete game as he slipped to 5-7 for Seattle, which has lost three-of-four overall.

 

Astros Agree To Deal With Top Pick Appel

(Houston, TX) -- The Astros have agreed to terms with Stanford pitcher Mark Appel, who was selected with the number-one pick earlier this month.  Terms of the deal were not released, but the assigned slot value for the pick is $7.8-million. The 21-year-old went 10-4 with a 2.12 ERA as a senior with the Cardinal.

 

MLB Begins Interviewing Players In Biogenesis Case

Major League Baseball is beginning to interview players connected to the Biogenesis case. CBSSports.com reports investigators are convinced at least some suspensions will come as a result. According to the report, MLB is still gathering evidence and has not yet met with Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun.
