Cards Clip Mets

(Flushing, NY) -- Allen Craig's RBI-single in the eighth inning held up as the Cardinals clipped the Mets 2-1 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Citi Field. Matt Carpenter tripled in the other run for the Redbirds, who have won five of their last seven. Adam Wainwright tossed seven innings of four-hit, shutout ball as he improved to 10-3. He is the first pitcher in the big leagues to reach 10 wins. Edward Mujica gave up a home run to Marlon Byrd in the ninth but held on for his 19th save. Matt Harvey struck out seven while giving up just one run on five hits as he fell to 5-1 with the tough-luck loss. The Mets have dropped four-of-five.

 

Cubs Clip Reds In 14 Innings

(Chicago, IL) -- Pinch-hitter Julio Borbon singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 14th inning as the Cubs clipped the Reds 6-5 at Wrigley Field. Darwin Barney's RBI-single in the eighth tied the game at five. David DeJesus homered, while Nate Schierholtz scored three times for the Northsiders, who avoided a sweep in the four-game set. Hector Rondon pitched the final two innings to pick up the win and improve to 1-0. Joey Votto drove in two runs and Shin-Soo Choo plated a run and scored twice for Cincinnati, which had won 12 straight in Chicago. Jonathan Broxton fell to 2-2 with the loss.

 

Nats Nip Rockies

(Denver, CO) -- Ryan Zimmerman hit a two-run homer and drove in three as the Nationals nipped the Rockies 5-4 in the rubber match of a three-game series at Coors Field. Ian Desmond went 4-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Nats, who have won four of their last five. Craig Stammen tossed two scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win and improve to 4-2. Rafael Soriano gave up a run in the ninth but held on for his 17th save. Tyler Colvin, Wilin Rosario and Todd Helton all plated a run for the Rockies, who have dropped three-of-five. Matt Belisle fell to 4-3 with the loss.

 

Giants Crush Pirates

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Hunter Pence hit a three-run home run to help lift the Giants past the Pirates, 10-0, at PNC Park. San Francisco avoided being swept in three-game set. Gregor Blanco and Buster Posey each had three hits and two RBI as San Francisco improved to 34-31. Matt Cain is 5-and-3 after dealing six-and-two-thirds shutout innings. Pittsburgh only had three hits as a team and Pedro Alvarez got on base twice with two walks. They grounded into three double plays. Charlie Morton took the loss allowing two earned and two unearned runs in five innings. The Pirates are 39-27.  

 

A's Sink Yankees In 18th

(Oakland, CA) -- Nate Freiman singled in a run during the bottom of the 18th inning to give the Athletics a 3-2 walk-off win against the Yankees in Oakland. Derek Norris and Seth Smith each had an RBI for Oakland, which swept the three-game series. Jarrod Parker gave up two runs in eight frames while Jesse Chavez picked up the win. Robinson Cano hit a two-run home run in the first for New York, which has lost four-of-six. Hiroki Kuroda also tossed eight innings of two-run ball for a no decision.  Preston Claiborne suffered the loss.

 

Orioles Walk-Off On Red Sox

(Baltimore, MD) -- Chris Davis singled in a run to give the Orioles a 5-4, walk-off win over the Red Sox in 13 innings.  Danny Valencia belted a solo homer for Baltimore, which took the first of a four-game series at Camden Yards. Nick Markakis scored twice in the win. T.J. McFarland picked up the victory in relief. David Ortiz and Mike Carp each left the ballpark for Boston, which has lost two-of-three. Alex Wilson suffered the loss out of the bullpen.

 

Royals Dominate Rays

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- The Royals used an eight-run sixth inning headlined by an Elliot Johnson three-run homer to crush the Rays, 10-1, at The Trop. Eric Hosmer hit a solo shot, his second of the year, to help Kansas City jump to 31-33. Ervin Santana improved to 5-and-5 allowing one unearned run and striking out three in 7 2/3 innings. Luke Scott and Matt Joyce had two hits apiece in the loss. Jeremy Hellickson allowed all eight runs in the sixth and 10 hits to drop to 4-3. Tampa Bay is 35-31.

 

Phillies Pop Twins

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Jimmy Rollins knocked in a run during the eighth inning with a fielder's choice to break a two-all tie and help give the Phillies a 3-2 win over the Twins in Minnesota.  Ryan Howard and Michael Young each singled in a run for Philadelphia, which salvaged the three-game series and snapped a five-game skid. Cliff Lee struck out six over seven innings of two-run ball for his eighth win. Jonathan Papelbon picked up his 12th save. Justin Morneau knocked in two runs for Minnesota, which is now 6-5 this month. Jared Burton took the loss in relief.
