Cardinals Handle Mets

(Flushing, NY) -- Allen Craig's three-run homer highlighted a five-run fifth inning as the Cardinals rolled to a 9-2 win over the Mets at Citi Field. Matt Holliday went 3-for-5 with an RBI and three runs scored while Shane Robinson poked a solo homer for St. Louis. Michael Wacha tossed six innings of two-run ball for his first-career win as the Cards won their fourth in five games  Omar Quintanilla hit a solo homer for New York in defeat. Jeremy Hefner fell to 1-6 after pitching six innings and allowing six runs, only one of which was earned. The Mets have lost three in-a-row and seven out of their last eight.

 

Reds Pound On Cubbies

(Chicago, IL  -- Xavier Paul hit a three-run homer to highlight a six-run sixth inning as the Reds cruised to a 12-2 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. Zack Cozart added a three-run shot with four RBI while Joey Votto poked a two-run round tripper in the win.  Todd Frazier also got into the act with a solo bomb as Cincinnati won its third in four games. Tony Cingrani improved to 3-and-0 by dealing seven innings of two-run ball for the Redlegs. Cody Ransom popped a solo homer for Chicago while Alfonso Soriano added a sacrifice fly. Matt Garza allowed nine runs on nine hits over five-plus innings to fall to 1-1. Chicago has lost four out of five contests.

 

Blue Jays Get By White Sox In 10

(Chicago, IL) -- Rajai Davis scored the go-ahead run from third on a wild pitch, and a dropped tag at home plate added an insurance run in the top of the 10th for a 7-5 Blue Jays win over the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion hit home runs for the Jays. Davis and Adam Lind had three hits each. Brett Cecil got the win in relief and Casey Janssen earned his 14th save for Toronto. Adam Dunn and Cole Gillaspie homered for the Sox. Dunn hit his 17th of the season. Ramon Troncoso ended up as the losing pitcher.

 

Pirates Dump Giants

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Gerrit Cole helped the Pirates cruise past the Giants 8-2 as he picked up his first win in his first major league start. Cole allowed two runs and seven hits, while striking out two in six-and-one-thirds inning at PNC Park. He also had two-run single in the second inning.  Pedro Alvarez was 3-for-3 with a home run and three RBI, while Starling Marte connected for a solo shot. Pittsburgh is 38-and-26.  Tim Lincecum fell to 4-6 after giving up four runs, two of which were earned in 4 2/3 innings. Andres Torres and Joaquin Arias each had two hits for San Francisco, which dropped to 33-and-30.

Stanton Lifts Marlins Past Brewers

(Miami, FL) -- Giancarlo Stanton smacked a go-ahead two-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Marlins edged the Brewers 5-4 in the middle of a three-game set at Miller Park. Derek Dietrich also hit a two-run homer, while Logan Morrison doubled in a run for the Fish, who have won three of their last four. Chad Qualls was credited with the win. Steve Cishek closed it out for his seventh save. Yuniesky Betancourt and Scooter Gennett plated a run each in the seventh to give Milwaukee a 4-3 lead. Jonathan Lucroy and Aramis Ramirez also drove in a run each for the Brewers, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Jim Henderson fell to 2-2 with his first blown save.

Rockies Down Nats

(Denver, CO) -- Tyler Colvin smacked a pair of two-run homers as the Rockies downed the Nationals 8-3 in the opener of a three-game series at Coors Field. Carlos Gonzalez belted a three-run homer for the Rox, who have won five of their last seven games.  Jhoulys Chacin gave up two runs across five innings to improve his record to 4-3 with his first win since April 19. Chacin also went 2-for-4 with a run scored at the plate.  Denard Span had a two-run double and Ian Desmond also plated a run for the Nats, who had won their previous two. Dan Haren allowed five runs in five frames as he slipped to 4-8 with the loss.

Dodgers Beat D'backs After Benches-Clearing Brawl

(Los Angeles, CA  -- Tim Federowicz ripped a three-run double in the eighth inning to lift the Dodgers to a 5-3 win over the Diamondbacks at Chavez Ravine in a game that was marred by a benches-clearing brawl in the seventh inning. After each team had exchanged a turn at hitting a batter, Arizona starter Ian Kennedy plunked Los Angeles starter Zack Greinke, leading to the scuffle. Kennedy, along with manager Kirk Gibson and hitting coach Turner Ward were ejected for the D'backs. Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire, outfielder Yasiel Puig and reliever Ronald Belisario were tossed as well in the aftermath. Andre Ethier hit a two-run homer for the Dodgers while Matt Guerrier earned the win and Kenley Jansen recorded his third save. Jason Kubel hit a two-run shot for Arizona and David Hernandez was saddled with the loss.

Padres Edge Braves

(San Diego, CA) -- Chase Headley homered to back eight strong innings from Andrew Cashner, as the Padres edged the Braves 3-2 in the middle of a three-game series at Petco Park. Cashner allowed just two runs as he improved to 5-3. Nick Hundley and Carlos Quentin also plated a run each for the Friars, who have won five of their last seven. Freddie Freeman had an RBI for Atlanta, which will try to avoid the sweep on Wednesday. Tim Hudson struck out seven but allowed three runs over 7 1/3 frames as he fell to 4-6 with the loss.  

Orioles Edge Angels

(Baltimore, MD) -- Nick Markakis ripped a two-run single in the seventh to lead the Orioles in a 3-2 win over the Angels in Baltimore. Manny Machado also drove in a run for the O's, who have won three straight to move a season-best nine games over the .500 mark. Miguel Gonzalez tossed eight innings of one-run ball to improve to 4-2 while Jim Johnson nailed down his 23rd save despite allowing a run in the ninth. Mike Trout homered for the second straight game and Albert Pujols added an RBI single for Los Angeles, which has lost four in-a-row. Jason Vargas was charged with three runs over six-and-two-thirds innings to fall to 5-4.

Jennings Helps Rays Past Red Sox

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Desmond Jennings went 3-for-5 with two solo homers as the Rays took out the Red Sox 8-3 at The Trop. Matt Joyce added a two-run homer while Evan Longoria went deep on a solo shot as Tampa Bay ended a two-game skid. Roberto Hernandez allowed three runs over seven innings to improve to 4-6. Mike Napoli had a two-run single for Boston. Jon Lester was rocked for seven runs over four-and-two-thirds innings and fell to 6-3. The Red Sox saw a three-game winning streak come to an end.

Indians Handle Rangers, Snap Losing Streak

(Arlington, TX) -- Corey Kluber limited the high-powered Rangers to one run over eight innings, leading the Indians to a 5-2 win in Arlington.  The victory snapped an eight-game losing streak Cleveland. Drew Stubbs drove in a pair of runs and Mark Reynolds had two hits and his 42nd RBI of the season in the win. Kluber got the win to improve to 4-4. Derek Holland struggled in his start for the Rangers, allowing four runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings. A.J. Pierzynski hit his fifth home run of the season for Texas. Holland fell to 5-3.

Tigers Clip Royals

(Kansas City, MO  -- Miguel Cabrera scored the go-ahead run on a Victor Martinez sac-fly in the eighth inning to give the Tigers a 3-2 win over the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. Max Scherzer improved to 9-and-0 dealing seven innings of two-run ball with six strikeouts. Jose Valverde locked up his ninth save as Detroit won for fifth time in its last six games. David Lough hit his first career home run in the loss. Reliever Aaron Crow dropped to 2-2. Kansas City only had five hits as it saw a six-game winning streak come to an end.

A's Hold Off Yankees

(Oakland, CA) -- The Athletics jumped out to a six-run lead and held on to beat the Yankees 6-4 at The Coliseum. Coco Crisp led off with a solo homer in the first and Derek Norris popped a three-run homer and ended with four RBI for Oakland. Bartolo Colon tossed six innings of three-hit ball to move to 8-and-2. Grant Balfour put out a fire in the ninth to notch his 16th save as the A's ended a two-game slide to win their fourth in six games. CC Sabathia surrendered six runs in as many innings to fall to 6-5 on the year for New York.  Mark Teixeira was 2-for-5 with three RBI for the Yanks, who had won six of their previous seven.

Mariners Sink Astros

(Seattle, WA) -- Aaron Harang pitched a two-hit complete game shutout with 10 strikeouts to lead the Mariners to a 4-0 win over the Astros at Safeco Field.  Raul Ibanez homered and Endy Chavez scored twice to go with two hits. The game was played before one of the smallest crowds ever for a Mariners game, with the U.S. men's national soccer team playing across the street at CenturyLink Field. Bud Norris allowed three runs over seven innings but took the loss. Houston has lost six straight.

Morneau Powers Twins Past Phillies

(Minneapolis, MN) -- Justin Morneau was 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead the Twins in a 3-2 victory over the Phillies at Target Field. Morneau ripped a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth for Minnesota, which had lost four of its previous five. Oswaldo Arcia also poked an RBI double while Brian Duensing picked up the win in relief. Glen Perkins locked down his 14th save in the victory. Ryan Howard and Michael Young each drove in a run for Philadelphia, which has dropped four straight. Cole Hamels pitched six innings of two-run ball in the start but it was Mike Adams that suffered the loss in relief.
