Cubs Clip Angels In Extras

(Anaheim, CA) -- Anthony Rizzo doubled in three runs in the top of the 10th inning to help the Cubs clip the Angels, 8-6.  Cody Ransom lifted a three-run homer for Chicago, which snapped a three-game slide. Kevin Gregg picked up the win in relief.  Mark Trumbo belted a pair of home runs for Los Angeles, which has lost five of its last six games.  Howie Kendrick was 4-for-5 with a two-run shot in the loss. Robert Coello suffered the loss out of the bullpen.

 

Goldschmidt's Slam Leads D'backs Past Cards

(St. Louis, MO) -- Paul Goldschmidt smacked his second grand slam in less than a week as the Diamondbacks cruised past the Cardinals 10-3 at Busch Stadium. The start of the game was delayed one hour due to rain. Gerardo Parra plated a pair of runs, while Willie Bloomquist and Wil Nieves both went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Arizona, which has won two of the first three in the four-game set. Wade Miley scattered three runs and 11 hits over six-and-two-thirds innings as he improved to 4-5. Carlos Beltran hit a two-run single and Shane Robinson drove in the other run for the Cards, who have dropped two-of-three. Joe Kelly permitted two runs, one earned, in five-and-two-thirds frames as he fell to 0-3.

 

White Sox Edge M's In 16 Innings

(Seattle, WA) -- Alejandro De Aza and Alex Rios plated a run each in the 16th inning to give the White Sox a 7-5 win over the Mariners at Safeco Field. The game was scoreless through 13 innings until both teams put up five runs each in the 14th.  Rios finished 4-for-8 with two RBI and a run scored for the White Sox, who snapped an eight-game losing streak. Jeff Keppinger also drove in two runs in the victory.  Addison Reed tossed the final three innings, giving up all five runs in the 14th, but was credited with the win. Kyle Seager hit a game-tying grand slam in the 14th for the M's, who were aiming for their first three-game sweep of the season. Hector Noesi fell to 0-1 with the loss.

 

Teheran Flirts With No-No As Braves Sweep Bucs

(Atlanta, GA) -- Julio Teheran came within four outs of a no-hitter as the Braves blanked the Pirates, 5-0. The 22-year-old right-hander lost his bid when pinch-hitter Brandon Inge lined a single to left with two outs in the eighth inning. Teheran allowed just one hit, two walks and struck out a career-high 11 in eight innings of work to get the win. Evan Gattis and Gerald Laird homered for Atlanta, which swept the three-game series at Turner Field.  Pittsburgh starter Wandy Rodriguez allowed one run in a third of an inning to take the loss before leaving with tightness in his left forearm.

 

Brown Homers Again As Phils Sweep Fish

(Philadelphia, PA) -- Domonic Brown clubbed his 18th home run of the season to back seven solid innings from Cole Hamels as the Phillies beat the Marlins, 6-1. Ryan Howard had a two-run triple for Philadelphia, which swept the three-game series at Citizens Bank Park. Jimmy Rollins' RBI single snapped a 1-all tie to ignite a five-run seventh for the Phils.  Hamels struck out 11 while allowing just four hits and one run to improve to 2-9 on the season. A.J. Ramos allowed all five runs in the seventh to take the loss for Miami. Derek Dietrich's solo homer accounted for the Marlins' only run in the fourth.

 

Mets Clobber Nationals

(Washington, D.C.) -- David Wright and Marlon Byrd paced the Mets offense with home runs in their 10-1 win over the Nationals.  Byrd and Anthony Recker drove in three runs and Wright added two more. Dillon Gee pitched seven strong innings and allowed a run on nine hits to pick up his second straight win and improve to 4-and-6. Ian Desmond drove in the only run for the Nationals. Dan Haren took the loss for Washington after lasting just four innings. Haren is 4-7 on the season, but has lost four in-a-row. 

The Nationals have placed starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 15-day disabled list with a right lat strain.  The move is retroactive to June 1. Strasburg left Washington's 3-2 win over Atlanta last Friday after the second inning. The 24-year-old is 3-and-5 with a 2.54 ERA in 12 starts this season.

 

Rockies Smash Reds

(Cincinnati, OH) -- Carlos Gonzalez hit three home runs and Troy Tulowitzki hit two, powering the Rockies to a 12-4 win over the Reds. Gonzalez drove in six runs and Tulowitzki went 5-for-5 and added three RBI. Nolan Arenado added four hits and scored three runs. Todd Helton blasted a two-run shot in the win. Jon Garland got the win to improve to 4-6.  Xavier Paul hit a three-run shot for the Reds  Starting pitcher Pedro Villareal took the loss as he was tagged for six runs on 10 hits in three-and-two-thirds innings in his first game of the season.

 

Yankees Hold On To Sweep Tribe

(Bronx, NY) -- Travis Hafner hit a two-run homer and Brett Gardner added a three-run blast as the Yankees beat the Indians 6-4 in the Bronx. Chris Stewart singled in a run for New York, which built a 6-0 lead in the second inning and hung on from there.  CC Sabathia threw his first complete game of the year as the Yankees swept the three-game series. Corey Kluber gave up all six runs in six innings of work to fall to 3-and-4 with the loss.  Yan Gomes hit a two-run homer and Jason Kipnis and Nick Swisher also drove in runs for Cleveland, which has lost 10 of its last 13 games.

 

Rays Blank Tigers

(Detroit, MI) -- The Rays broke a scoreless tie in the top of the ninth inning with three runs and held on for a 3-0 win over the Tigers. Matt Joyce had an RBI sac fly, Evan Longoria singled in a run and Desmond Jennings plated Longoria with a triple in the deciding inning. Alex Cobb dealt seven-and-two-thirds shutout innings with seven strikeouts, but reliever Joel Peralta earned the win. Fernando Rodney locked up his 12th save.  The teams have split the first two of the three-game set. Doug Fister was on his way to a complete game, but couldn't get through the ninth. Fister was charged with all three runs as he fell to 5-3.

 

Rangers Roll Red Sox

(Boston, MA) -- Elvis Andrus doubled in two runs to give the Rangers the lead for good as they went on to beat the Red Sox, 3-2. Adrian Beltre lifted a solo home run in the fourth for Texas, which has won two-of-three. Neal Cotts picked up the win in relief while Joe Nathan secured his 18th save. John Lackey gave up a run across six innings in the start for Boston. Craig Breslow suffered the loss out of the bullpen.  Dustin Pedroia hit a solo homer in the sixth for Boston, which had won three straight. Texas starter Alexi Ogando tossed five-and-two-thirds frames of one-run ball in a no decision.

 

Astros' Home Run Barrage Blasts Orioles

(Houston, TX) -- The Astros bashed a season-high six home runs in an 11-7 win over the Orioles. J.D. Martinez, Carlos Pena and Jason Castro each hit two-run shots.  Matt Dominguez drove in three runs total in the win.  Dallas Keuchel picked up the win after going six innings and allowing a run on five hits to improve to 3-2. Matt Wieters and J.J. Hardy homered for the Orioles, who trailed 9-1 entering the seventh inning.  Freddy Garcia allowed six runs on seven hits in three-plus innings to drop to 2-3.

 

Royals Top Twins

(Kansas City, MO) -- David Lough doubled in a pair of runs during a three-run first inning as the Royals topped the Twins 4-1 in the middle of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Salvador Perez and Billy Butler also plated a run each for KC, which has split the first two games and snapped an 11-game losing streak at home.  Jeremy Guthrie tossed six innings of one-run ball to improve to 6-3. Greg Holland closed it out for his 10th save. Josh Willingham drove in the lone run in the first inning for the Twins, who had won three in-a-row and seven of their previous eight. P.J. Walters allowed three unearned runs in six frames as he fell to 2-1.

 

A's Use Five-Run Seventh To Beat Brewers

(Milwaukee, WI) -- Brandon Moss smacked a three-run homer to cap a five-run seventh inning as the Athletics beat the Brewers, 6-1. Josh Donaldson went 3-for-4, including a go-ahead, two-run single in the seventh as the A's took the rubber match of the three-game series at Miller Park  Oakland has won five of its last six games.  Bartolo Colon fired seven innings of one-run ball to win his fourth straight and improve to 7-2. Carlos Gomez tripled in the lone run in the first inning for the Brewers, who have dropped three-of-four. Yovani Gallardo allowed five runs in six frames to fall to 4-6 with the loss.
