Mattoon Moves Into Championship Game Against EHS

OLNEY -- Mattoon High School stepped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back in a 7-3 win over Charleston in the Class 3A Olney Baseball Regional Thursday.

The Green Wave's first run of the game came on a Ben Vieth home run. Mattoon then tallied two in the third, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Charleston's scores came in the fifth with two runs and seventh with a run.

Warrem pitched the six-hitter with one walk and four strikeouts. Sparks had a single and double, Vieth a single and home run, Stone a single, double and two RBI and Price two singles.

Mattoon improves to 19-11 and moves into the championship game against No. 5 seeded Effingham. The Hearts knocked off No. 4 Olney and No. 1 Salem to reach the title contest at noon Saturday.
