Cardinals Close Out Padres

(San Diego, CA) -- The Cardinals used a three-run first, featuring an RBI triple from Matt Holliday, to close out the Padres 5-3 and win the three-game series. Allen Craig and Yadier Molina each drove in a run with a single for St. Louis, which has won three-of-four. Tyler Lyons gave up one run over seven inning to win his first-ever major league start. Jedd Gyorko hit a solo homer for San Diego. Burch Smith allowed four runs in one-plus innings for the loss. Smith was optioned to the minors following the defeat.

 

Pirates Need Only One To Top Cubs

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- Francisco Liriano out-dueled Jeff Samardzija to lead the Pirates past the Cubs 1-0. Garrett Jones drove in Andrew McCutchen with a two-out single in the bottom of the first inning, and the Bucs made it stand for Liriano, who shut out the Cubs for seven innings.  Liriano struck out nine and allowed two hits to improve to 3-0.  Samardzija was the hard-luck losing pitcher despite allowing a run on on three hits with eight strikeouts. He's 2-6. Welington Castillo had two of Chicago's four hits. Mark Melancon earned his first save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning for Pittsburgh.

 

Buchholz Stays Perfect As BoSox Beat White Sox

(Chicago, IL) -- Clay Buchholz fired seven strong innings to remain perfect on the season as the Red Sox beat the White Sox 6-2 to avoid a three-game sweep at U.S. Cellular Field. Buchholz allowed just one run on five hits and three walks as he improved to 7-0. David Ortiz and Daniel Nava drove in two runs apiece for the BoSox, who have won six of their last eight. Paul Konerko homered and Alex Rios plated the other run for the Pale Hose, who have dropped three-of-five. Hector Santiago fell to 1-3 with the loss, despite striking out nine in six innings of two-run ball.

 

Rangers Top A's To Avoid Sweep

(Arlington, TX) -- David Murphy hit a two-run homer and Adrian Beltre added a solo shot in a three-run first inning as the Rangers beat the Athletics, 3-1. Ross Wolf (pictured below), a Newton High School graduate, gave up just three hits and one run in five innings to get the win in his first big league start. Joe Nathan notched his 14th save as Texas avoided a three-game sweep at Rangers Ballpark. Jarrod Parker settled down after the first inning to pitch seven innings of three-run ball in defeat. He's now 2-6. Brandon Moss drove in the lone run for the A's with a sac-fly in the fourth. Derek Norris had two of Oakland's four hits in the setback.
